Moreno has just requested a trade away from Portland. Feels under appreciated and talks for a new contract have broken down. I’m very, very upset right now, and with the amount of players that have had a problem with Gio, I do not see why he should be coach. Moreno is one of our most talented players. This is ridiculous

It'd be easier to appreciate him if he scored more than 0 goals a season.

He had six goals and 7 assists last season. He’s a fantastic player who clearly hasn’t been up to his level lately, and despite that leads the team in assists this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not happy with how he’s been utilized (the article pretty much says as much) within the structure of the team. And obviously Gio’s tactics aren’t working out, so I don’t blame him

Gio has lost the team and I don't care what anyone says. When zuparic and Moreno have been vocal in their frustration with the team, it is pretty obvious gio needs to go. The coach is the easiest option to move. And last year and this year has proven he has lost the team. Move on and get someone who can inspire this team.

I wouldn’t agree with that at the start of the season but I certainly do now

Martin Rennie.........

I agree he's a promising talent, but he has exactly 0 goals this season. That's a fact, and it's not good enough. Attacking, not defending is his main job. Didn't Bill T. have 5 goals for us one year? I don't particularly want him to leave, and I'm certainly hoping he has a better coach next year, but he needs to improve fast if he's ever going to make Timbers better and/or get sold to a better league .

He also has exactly six assists this season, leading the team. He’s not been great but at this point I’m willing to put that as much on the coach as I am on the player. He was amazing last year. He’s more than a promising talent, he’s one of the best players on the team.

There are a grand total of four players who have scored more than 1 goal this year. Boli and Evander two guys carrying our offense. Asprilla is one with 2 goals (one bike and another tap in), and he’s been very poor this year. Mosquera is the other, and he’s a defender. Every offensive player is struggling to score goals besides Evander and Boli

Exactly. Gio deserves much of the blame for the limp attack this year. But surely Moreno isn't the only player whose talent he has failed to optimize. Every player except McGraw and Zuparich (yes, they've scored!) who has scored this year has played fewer minutes than Moreno, many a LOT fewer. And all have managed to score despite Gio's coaching. Moreno is on pace for 0 goals for 2023, not good enough. In case it's not clear from previous posts, I'd much rather get rid of Gio than Moreno. But Moreno has to be better than he has been this year regardless of his coach. If Moreno's transfer request helps ownership to move on from Gio after this year, it will be far and away his best goal contribution of the season.

Just call it a 0-0 draw which it was. Both teams would be happy not to have the loss, both coaches can claim they were the better team, and we don't have to sit through more of that, whatever it was...

I think that could be a problem because one of the teams could sneak into a playoff spot with the 1 point from a draw, and other teams could protest that. I think they will pick up the game at halftime on a date neither team has a game currently. They did this earlier this year with FC Dallas/St. Louis after their game had been suspended in the 50th minute.

Expand full comment

Yeah, they'll absolutely finish it at some point - for the Timbers, three points right now puts them in a tie for 9th, which means there's definitely something to play for.

"Something to play for". Gio's plan most of the time is to salvage a draw from the mess he's in by 80'. And often enough his feature has been to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory...

Rapids would never go for it. They have no home wins this season, and Timbers are prob their best chance to avoid a goose egg for the season.

That was a brutal first half to watch. But looking at the lineup for the Timbers I'm not surprised. There wasn't a player on the field that could create anything. For the first time in a while I was ready to turn off a game, and thankfully the weather did it for me.

I'm ready for a change. I'll support the team, root for the players I like to watch, but the excitement isn't there right now. I was a Gio supporter earlier this year, but I'm just not seeing IT anymore.

I am definitely far less emotionally invested in results, both last year and this. I still go to games, still love cheering for the team and hanging out with my friends and all that, but I no longer get two hours worth of cranky after the Timbers lose or don't play well, because this team just isn't good right now, and it's not worth that level of agita.

Expand full comment

Early in the season the Timbers would come out and press quite a bit on defense, try to make something happen, and I feel like that doesn't happen much anymore. Right now it doesn't feel like there is urgency to the games. At least make it fun.

I'm still enjoying watching soccer, and realize it takes just a few plays to make it really exciting. I've been watching Gold Cup highlights and have enjoyed that play. Timbers just aren't doing it for me.

I honestly don't understand why the second half could not have been played today. Flights could have been rescheduled, hotels could have been re-procured; it might have been kind of a mess, but it's better than flying back to Commerce City for a 45 min game at some point later this season.

Expand full comment

Fans. Lots of people have to work, and won't bother coming back. Sell more beer on a Saturday reschedule.

Expand full comment

I just don't know that a 45 minute half would move the needle on that enough to matter - particularly if they stop selling beer 20 min before the end of the half like they do in the 70th min at every other game. Seems like a lot of hassle for 25 min of concessions revenue.

Since they play this mls this time of the year with climate change and all of the confederate teams that have joined this and re-treaded old players, I call it "Major League Minstrel Show." Then we have no local tv that let us watch like in the past and have to use appletv I have removed all my flags/banners/bumper stickers from all my stuff I have no use to watch this anymore. Pay appletv 16.99 a month when I watch the EPL, Champions League,Europa League/etc. for 2 subscriptions of 4.99, you have to be crackers.

Although nothing is perfect, I really appreciate AppleTV. living 3 time zones west of Portland, it's great to be able to stream the game at my convenience, and fast forward through the halftime break. 100% better than ESPN+, a little more expensive but worth it due to no blackouts (I finally gave up trying to convince the Earthquake's TV affiliate that Hawaii is not in California).

Expand full comment

Do you like when they show you the scores of the matches when you are looking forward to watching a match the next day? MLS streaming did that several years back. ESPN+ does not do that or Peacock, paramount, etc. I guess I like local media and not all that hype that Major League Minstrel Show does.....and that 16.99 for mls is shite.

Expand full comment

All you have to do is turn the scores off, there's an icon on the main screen.

Expand full comment

....after you see the scores. No one else makes it a default setting. Besides, the 16.99 was/is the deal breaker. I also checked the timbers schedule for the season...all matches are only on apple, I thought they had one more match for free OTA. Maybe next year I will check back to see who the new manager will be and apple will be gone.

And yet you're here, commenting on a league you actively disdain and refuse to pay for.

You're right! I'm here just because this website started sending me emails and I foolishly did the click-bait. I will put a stop to that.

Or even watch….

Wait a minute! the timbers are giving us 3 matches to watch on OTA; OOOPS! I think there is one left to watch for the season! By the way I am also dissing the EPL league because they have sold out to the murdering bone-saw-saudiis who now own 60% of Manchester United to the glazers 40%.

Find me a league that doesn't put its games behind a paywall. There isn't one.

"I am also dissing the EPL league because they have sold out to the murdering bone-saw-saudiis who now own 60% of Manchester United to the glazers 40%."

So you were fine when Abramovich bought Chelsea, and it was OK when the Emiratis bought Manchester City (and NYCFC!)? Top level soccer is basically this now, one big sportswash.

No I was not....and Arseholes emirates the same. I watch nothing but Scottish football in their hometown stadiums now. Oligarchs are ruling this fascist world.

MLS is always kind of scrappy and chaotic, I find it entertaining myself. But I'm not paying Apple a damn dime, that's for sure.

Where are you getting EPL etc. for 4.99?

Peacock

Some matches you have to wait a day or 2, but that helps so you can watch them on replay. Remember to put a piece of paper at the top right of the screen so you won't see the scores of other matches.

Spot on! No local game commenters and it seems like they never talk about the Timbers. I use to turn the sound off last year watching it. Now, like today, I turned to see who won and this happened. But we have to remember a few years back at that snow-match they played the firat part of the season that should have been re-scheduled, but mls....damn the torpedoes...full steam ahead.

Expand full comment

I have watched Premier League games played through heavy snow. That's not unique to MLS.

If you don't enjoy watching it, why do you?

Expand full comment

They do not play in snow that deep.

Expand full comment

No accumulation like in colorado a few years back; they even plowed it a few times in order to finish the match with the timbers losing.....of course. The ref stands at the half way spot and if he can see the goalkeepers, game on. If the snow becomes so foot wear won't work game off. My over-the-fence neighbor use to ref in the UK. And by the way the refs NEVER call bad throw ins anymore because it slows the match down.....too bad.

Wonder if they will even bother if both teams out of playoff race (if won’t matter).

Expand full comment

The way I see it, a soccer match is more than the results or on field performance or place on the table, it is the work of scores of people - trainers, medics, officials, stadium workers, media workers, and the athletes - to entertain idiots like me, so I appreciate it.

So yeah, they'll "bother", it's their job, and even if the results are sucky it still gives everyone experience, chances to improve performance, and at the end of the day a paycheck.

Expand full comment

It's doubtful either team advances out of the group stage of the Leagues Cup tournament with Liga MX. The group stage ends July 26 when the Timbers play Tigres. That would mean 3.5 weeks without any scheduled matches. Plenty of time to play 45 minutes in Commerce City.

Why bother with the dog and pony show, just flip a coin.

Why not? it would give PTFC better odds.

Let's just see how Vancouver, Chicago and Kansas City fare this Saturday... from what I can tell we could get buried, and be pretty far behind once the 15th rolls around.

Unless they improve, Timbers look likely to finish 13th or 14th. But if they manage to beat Vancouver on the road next month, they win Cascadia Cup. Small consolation.

A recap of a similar match: 2 teams were playing a football match the score was 0-0 at half time. At the start of the 2nd half a truck drove by and back fired. One of the teams ran off the field thinking it was gun shots; it took the rest of the match for the other team to score.
