As I mentioned elsewhere in these comments: it's like Western coaches have some sort of weird block about playing Japanese players in their best positions. Yui Hasegawa (possibly the best playmaking attacking mid in the game) as a 6 at City...comically stupid, although she's perfectly adequate there. Hina was primarily a LW at Leonessa...she's left-footed. But would be brilliant in the middle for us...

I wonder if it's because coaches stereotype (usually correctly) how smart high level Japanese players are and assume that they can just fit in wherever in ways others can't.

That may be a big factor, as well as that most train heavily with their off foot and thus exhibit less of a preference than many.
