"I’ll predict a 0-0 draw where the amount of total shots on goal is less than the number of yellow cards shown, and everyone who watched the game regrets devoting precious hours of their life."

Haha! Yeah, Ima have my phone on me at all times to break up the boredom. I feel compelled to watch because I always do but I am preemptively regretting it. Maybe something crazy will happen that will at least make it somewhat entertaining. Might need to be Red Card Wedding-level to spice up this slog-fest.

Clegg and Griffith both signed for this game with Mabiala out injured and Paredes still probably not healthy enough to start. Good depth but I hope Miller starts at CB with Mosquera at RB. I’m looking forward to Caliskan presumably starting again

This game will be rough to watch from both sides

#GioOut

Just getting my post-match comment ready

This one feels like a forgone conclusion. So, does Gio go on the hot seat FOR REAL with a loss?

We are doing better than the Red Bulls, Fire and Miami were doing when they sacked their coaches, and in terms of the playoffs haven't hit the point of no return... yet.

I'll be interested to see what the picture is like come mid August.

Unfortunately, there seems to be nothing that could get Gio fired this year.

This is, so far, the worst Timbers team in the MLS era. And yet there's not even been the dreaded-vote-of-confidence statement from the GM/FO. It's bad, it's gonna get worse, and it won't change until the winter at least.

No, IMO we were worse in 2012 before John Spencer got fired. That's not a comparison I want to make though.

2023: 22 points through 21 games, -8 GD

2012: 18 points through 21 games, -16 GD

So they have gotten a bit "better" than when I checked that stat a few weeks ago, when the only thing that was smaller than 2012 was GD, but not by much.

...or ever.

We are plumbing depths we shouldn't be plumbing as a club at this point, so waiting around for worse is kind of mind boggling to me. And yet, here we are. Gio and team have pulled out wonder wins in the past, so, we'll see. The odds seemed stacked, even facing a worse team. I guess we'll see who is actually worse.

I'm glad to see the author has Nathan in his predicted 11. That would be awesome, although, the 4-4-2 showed itself as absolutely the worst formation to run. There was no possession and no service to two forwards. Just move Moreno to the 10 and have Nathan at a wing and Loria at the other and Boli up top. I'd like to see that.

It isn't a popular opinion but this is why I like the MLS playoff structure. Teams at the bottom of the table have something to play for.

I like the MLS playoffs too, but I don't like how many teams get in as of this season. And I'd say that even if the Timbers weren't struggling to stay in touch with that last playoff spot.

As Ted Lasso would say, the only thing we know is that one of these two teams will win.

Why do they even play these games?

TV money.

Thunderstorms in the forecast add to the uncertainty. Last thing the Timbers need are long weather delays.

Expand full comment

Actually, it's the first thing they need. A delay so long the game is postponed, till Evander is healthy ann McGraw is back and new CB is in the team and ready

We should have Evander McGraw and the new guy whose name I keep forgetting on the 15th right?

Miguel Araujo is available starting tomorrow when the transfer window opens (it closes Aug. 2). He's already with the team, but I have no idea when he'll be ready to play.

He’s available starting tomorrow but our next game after tonight is on the 15th. He will for sure be ready to go by then, but I would not at all be surprised if Zuparic and Zac continue to be the starting pair for the rest of the season and Araujo plays a few minutes here and there

I'm sure injuries and/or YC accumulation will give him opportunities to start. And McGraw may not be back even by 7/15 game -- depends on how far Canada goes in Gold Cup. He should be given major minutes to play in any case, to see what we've got and get him acclimated to league. It's a lost season anyway, so there's no downside.

Seems likely that Canada will play the US in the next round on Sunday, and I don’t see them winning that. And if they top their group then they play Jamaica, who would arguably be an even tougher opponent for them on paper. That will give him plenty of time to get back with the team.

I would love to see us try a 3 ATB formation because what we’re doing now isn’t working. Araujo-Zuparic-McGraw is a hell of a center back crew

Expand full comment

Yes, the Peruvian CB whose name escapes me also.

And actually, we may not even have McGraw by the 15th, if Canada keeps advancing in the Gold Cup. Although they haven't looked great and may face U.S. on Sunday's knockout game.
