Evander, Boli, and Moreno plus Asprilla or Y Chara on the side should be scoring goals. We’ve scored three in seven. We actually have the attacking talent that has been missing the last couple years. It’s clear Gio has one idea: counter.

This sucks. We suck.

Change something.

You actually thought Gio was tactically flexible? You ready to fire Gio? Has this loss started you on the Kublr Ross scale of grief?

I wanted to see Gio with attacking talent. We haven’t had it adequately since Brian Fernandez flamed out. Frankly, in myopinion Gio did quite a bit of overachieving with fairly unimpressive rosters.

That has totally flipped. The roster isn’t where it should be, but the attacking talent is there now. But we’re performing like shit. Worst of all there is no imagination or attractiveness that I hoped would come along with guys like Evander and a developed Moreno.

Expand full comment

I'm not sure how you can say that about Gio. You honestly believe our team's manager has had zero input in who we sign since 2019? That's preposterous. If true, all the more reason why Grabavoy needs to go. But also if true, Gio obviously doesn't understand how to fields a team without his preferred 11. If a manager can't work around injuries and call ups, what good is he? MLS is a very parity league, all teams dream with this.

Expand full comment

We were hamstrung financially after the Fernandez debacle.

And he did work around injuries and other limitations. Two finals in four years is impressive.

But I think Gio’s usefulness is exhausted at this point. We need a coach with bigger more attractive ideas.

Expand full comment

We should probably discuss this on the ppost-match thread - I really should participate more on those threads - but with Messi's arrival, wonder if the league might attact a stronger pool of coaching candidates? Like who could we attact with a broad coaching search?

Expand full comment

I feel like signing Messi was just as dependent on hiring Martino as money, etc, why would he suffer a second rate manager?

Expand full comment

You have to wonder if they fired Neville because they were going to get Messi. Maybe Leo said "Phil goes or I don't come". Maybe the coach won't be Tata. But whoever it is will not be a tactical dummy like Gio.

Expand full comment

Pathetic. It breaks my heart to see the depths to which we’ve sunk. I think it’s time to hit reset and replace the entire coaching staff, there’s potential in some of these players but it’s barely being tapped. We’re seeing glimpses of what could be, but it’s just not happening, so very frustrating.

Can't wait to hear about the "positives" and how we were the better team. Holy hell.

If it was me, I'd fire Gio in the tunnel. Or maybe fire him tomorrow morning and then issue the pr release. And while you're at it, sack Grabavoy. This team - plus the fans - need a reboot.

Rather hire Callaghan. Actually go international. We shouldn't seel Evander quite yet. A new coach could work with him. Everything else, I agree with. Plus fire everyone in the GO, including Grabavoy. Fire the academy staff except for the guy who won GEN AD cup. Also get rid of the T2 coach. And finally, sell the team to owner r/owners with ambition and money.

Callaghan is not the guy. The fact you are using his two....TWO! games of experience as a head coach to hire him shows that it is a hot take.

Vargas has experience implementing a system within a national team system, that is extremely time consuming but he has done it in a year with limited camps. That just shows his quality. It means he is very good at explaining his system in a clear and simple way. And that system is better than anything we have ever played. You are praising Callaghan for calling a lineup. But no way in hell can a coach train and implement a system in a month. That means you didn't see his system. What you saw was him putting out his best 11 and letting them play what they have already done under GGG. YOU CANNOT IMPLEMENT A SYSTEM IN A MONTH WITH A TWO WEEK TRAINING CAMP. You can't.

It's already been said. By many international coaches that it's hard to implement a system quickly in the international game. Even scally said that he hopes they bring in a coach that just let's them play and makes it simple. Cause playing for your country is enough to motivate and push the players. Not a complex style.

As for Evander. He is not a 10. He is a good 8. That's it. He is not fast. He is not clinical in front of goal. He is an assist guy. I said this before we signed him. His speed is a 6. His ball control is an 8. His vision is a 7. His finishing is a 6. His touch is a 7. He will never be a Valeri or blanco on the offensive side if the ball. He will never be a muhktar. He is highly overrated. And unless you are going to put out a front 3 that are equal or better than his ability, he becomes a overpaid 8.

Jun 22, 2023·edited Jun 22, 2023

An 8? Lol. He is a 10 and nothing else. You really see him as a box to box? Our best 8 is Paredes then maybe Ymmi or Santi but not Evander

Expand full comment

You do realize he played as an 8 in Europe right? That's the position he always played. WE are playing him as a "10" because we want to make him the next "valeri" which is what everyone was asking for. Square peg round hole.

Expand full comment

His instinct seems to be to hold up and pass/connect... Coaching might expect something else, but I think I see it. That doesn't bode well for our typical tactics of spray-and-pray, and counters. Without support, he is on an island. That has to be frustrating for the player.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I can see it in his body language. As a matter of fact, even the commentator for the game said he could see Evander getting frustrated with his teammates. And that was 15 minutes into the game. So you can tell it is a lingering feeling. I asked this question early in the season. Does anyone else think that Evander is regretting coming to mls? Cause his body language on the ball says he does. Like he didn't realize that the Talent around him was going to be so poor. I was saying this to my gf. "Evander is not a 10. He is not a Valeri replacement. I knew exactly what his strengths and weaknesses were before joining is and I wasn't high on them trying to make him a 10. He is a player that needs talented attackers in front of him for his strengths to shine. Maintaining possession and creating opportunities for others to score. But this isn't Europe. We have a salary cap. Meaning he doesn't have the talent in front of him to have his strengths shine." End quote.

Valeri and blanco could make individual magic happen in their prime. They weren't reliant on others to score goals. Evander is. He isn't a scorer, he is an assist machine but we don't have the talent to finish and we don't have one player with individual magic ability like prime Valeri and blanco. We are far from it.

Expand full comment

Yeah, it is a hot take. But BJ was put in a tough spot and actually shown something over two matches that's he not just an assistant. As for Vargas, he's never coached senior ball, period. I don't want a guy who has only coaches youth level. Personally, I want a coach that has nothingto do with Grabavoy or anyboy in this organization. We need a fresh start.

Expand full comment

The only thing that matters between the youth and senior teams is the psychological side of the game and how that translates to the egos of the adult players. That is the only thing I would worry about with him as coach. In the youth game you don't have the big ego's. So can you handle the older players and pre-maddonas. But let's put it this way cause that seemed to be your argument against vargas. He coaches a youth team. Didn't Caleb porter also coach "youth" players before becoming our coach and winning us a championship is 2015?

Expand full comment

Re: Porter. He got fired from Col. He's like Kreis - the league has passed him by. Honestly, do you think Porter could survive in MLS today? Look, I like Varas but youth football is not the same as senior level. I do not want to have a manager in training. It is one thing to learn abot league rules and the travel demands, etc. Quite another to go from coaching youth to adults. I do think you are unestimated youth vs senior football. But we can agree to disagree.

Expand full comment

Porter won a championship with Columbus. Porter got fired because of results and mostly his attitude. There are plenty of coaches still in the league that have been fired from teams and find another and succeed. Coaches that have never won 2 championships like porter. I fail to understand your argument.
