What's the verdict on Boli? Dude seems to get a lot of chances but not find the back of the net. At least 6 in the last couple of games.

CHRISTHIAN MOTHERFUCKING PAREDES.

That’s all I got for now, what a game. Personally I think his best game ever as a Timber, he was absolutely phenomenal. Acosta is second place for MOTM, he was also fantastic. But Paredes ran the show both offensively and defensively

Expand full comment

Can’t argue. Great show from Paredes.

Was that his first time in the armband?

Expand full comment

No, he was captain for the 5-0 loss to Houston.

Expand full comment

I think he had the armband a few days ago but I’m not sure

A few games ago*

On the football manager game I assigned Chara the armband but he didn't want it, I gave it to Paredes and the team won...

Yeah-we were there and he was all over the place. A little Chara-esk (I said a little) with the additional offensive chops.

Expand full comment

Paredes was a force of nature. But who replaces him Saturday? Yellow-card accumulation.

Expand full comment

A midfield of Acosta, Evander, and Moreno should do just fine against last place Colorado

Expand full comment

Ok, I feel better about Acosta starting against Col and our chances to get another win. He does seem to have a pretty good sense of his responsibilities and doesn't try to do hero ball. That's more than I can say for some guys. I also did like the fact that we still went for the daggar late when the Quakes pulled one back. As we've seen earlier in the season, the team would just bunker hoping for the point -even at home. Instead, we kept attacking. That's progress. I'm sure the guys are semi exhausted at this point but hopefully some good recovery time in the cryo or whatever they use will help them go another 90 on Sat. Again I ask: who are these guys and what were they doing earlier in the sason?

Expand full comment

It's been an awesome and educational experience for me, really watching and learning about the team and the game through a coaching change. And seeing notable results, even in the boys' body language on the pitch. Watching Evander celebrate like that was rad.

Acosta for MOTM. Man, that guy can read the game well.

Expand full comment

Paredes was great, too

Expand full comment

Might honestly go down as the best signing of the season, if he keeps playing like he did tonight. We might actually have a player that can make up for chara not being on the field.

Acosta was fantastic. That step at the end to help kill more time. Fantastic

What’s Ebo have on his neck?

Expand full comment

It’s a cock ring for your head. Seriously; “works” in the same principle, by restricting blood return past the gimmick with the idea that the increased perfusion is beneficial.

On your junk, well, duh. On your head this thing supposedly increases intracranial blood volume and prevents your brain from sloshing around when you take a hit, so decreases concussion susceptibility.

Utterly unproven; the stuff I’ve read suggests the manufacturer did no clinical trials and has no biological data. It’s just goofy theory based on “well, it works for yer junk, so…”

But it seems to appeal to some folks…

Klingenberg of the Thorns wears the same thing. Supposed to help prevent so manner of head/neck injury

Rocky Rodriguez and Emily Menges too

I swear this team even kills time better than they ever did under Gio. Not trying to pile on, just an observation.

Expand full comment

The defense has been make better clearances, too. Also there was a sequence or two when we were able to get the ball out of our half by using Asprilla as an outlet. Hardley ever saw such stuff under Gio. Who are these guys, anyway? And whatwere they doing for 3/4 of the season?

You can throw a shoe at a ref and not get carded? Cool.

Expand full comment

He picked up a yellow, though they didn’t mention it in the broadcast.

Expand full comment

I'm hoping the Disciplinary Committee takes a look

Expand full comment

Yeah, I can't imagine he doesn't get a fine...

Expand full comment

This ref has lost the plot

Expand full comment

Did Espinoza throw his boot at the ref? Or near the ref?

Expand full comment

More like spiked it on the ground near the line judge. Still, got off easy with a yellow.

Expand full comment

Looked like he threw it in the direction of the AR

Expand full comment

Shouldn’t that be an instant red card?

Expand full comment

I certainly would think dead red was warranted.

Expand full comment

One would think but again anything Pro Refs is a crap shoot

If the Timbers could score and actually put a game to bed, that would be great. Thanks

I agree. I was at the game and several more goals would seem to have been there's to take.

all right, need another, Timbers!

Is it just me or does Evander look more settled since MJ took over?

I don't know what's happened, but the dude looks good out there.

He was starting to look more settled when they finally decided to not play him as a 10. He is so much better further back.

Expand full comment

This freaking team...damn

Expand full comment

How much of a sea anchor was Gio? Same players suddenly acting as if they know what to do, where to be, how to move the ball with intent and coordination.

Expand full comment

Ditto. I think a whole bunch of us are wondering the same. I hate to bring it up but since I mentioned it earlier...how much of the team looking clueless was just Gio vs Gio & his assistants?

Expand full comment

This freaking team. Nice little finish from Evander.

We should have sacked Gio sooner.

two goals every game since Miles took over!

Boli skying a shot drinking game

Just make Bravo a wingback already and spend more money on defense.

Expand full comment

Pro Refs never fail to disappoint

Expand full comment

That is pathetic. Stone cold penalty.

Expand full comment

Seems to me that was a clear and obvious error to not give a penalty there. I guess that's what the VAR told the center ref but Ramy didn't want to admit his error.

Expand full comment

What a first half. We look absolutely dominant. Possessing and then counter pressing really well. We’re clicking really well. Moreno has been awesome, I also love him in the middle but he’s great wherever he plays. And Bingham has been great as well. Just super pleased with the team right now, but we gotta do more in the final third and put some goals up, otherwise it’ll all be for nothing

Expand full comment

We need better service on corner kicks. Evander floats it in with no pace and too much height.

Expand full comment

JUST tuned in to catch the last second of the hoghlights. Paredes goal? Who were the two with assists—Acosta and Mosquera?

Expand full comment

Paredes played the ball to Acosta I believe. And scored on the return from Acosta.

Expand full comment

Paredes poked the ball out from a San Jose player and it bounced out to Blanco. Blanco passed Boli, who passed to Acosta, who crossed it to Paredes for the goal. Blanco, Evander, and Mosquera were also running in late and we had 6 players in the box (4 unmarked) when Paredes scored. San Jose only had 5 including the keeper. Nice full team counter.

Expand full comment

Looks like the team is continuing to play free and loose - not uptight as we 've seen for most of the season. In light of the whole Arena fiasco in New England, do you think there was conflict between Gio and some of the coaching staff? Like how much input did the assistants really have? No opinion on MJ as a head coach cause this is a lame duck situation but he clearly has his own ideas.

Expand full comment

say more about the Arena fiasco?

Expand full comment

In addition to Deanna's comment... The Revs made Williams the interim head caoch but the players refused to train under him because he and the team refused to tell them why Arena was canned. Some of Arena's other assistant coaches left. Management then promoted Clint Peay and his staff at Revs 2 to be the new coaches for the first team. Wild stuff going on over there!

Expand full comment

Reports are that Richie Williams and Curt Onalfo filed reports - complaints? - on Arena which contributed to the investigation that led to his ouster. There were reports that Arena told Williams he should look for another job as his contract wasn't getting renewed. it's been open season on speculation as to whether or not there was a divide with the Revs coaching staff. Like Shalrie Joseph actually thanked Bruce on twitter. Maybe I missed it but did anyone ask Joseph his feelings/thoughts on Gio's firing?

The Fish beat Col 2-0. Doesn't help us all hat much with regard to playoffs but maybe the Rapids will be too depressed to even put up a fight on Sat. I don't want Paredes to pick up a yellow right now but maybe Acosta will be ok playing against his old team. He's doing alright tonite and the Quakes are much better than the Rapids.

Expand full comment

I imagine Acosta feels pretty energized, going from a dead last team with even more problems than the Timbers to a resurgent motivated side with a new coach and way better energy. It's gotta be nice.

Expand full comment

And Paredes gets his yellow

Expand full comment

Yep. Acosta in for Saturday. Let's see how he does the rest of this match. I don't want him to pick any cards cause we have literally no one else.

So why is Ivacic persona non grata?

he's hurt.

His style doesn’t suit the defense we have at all. He is a great shot stopper but he is the old school stay in the goal don’t come off your line. It isn’t the style defense we have.

Expand full comment

Still seems odd that Sulte is the current backup.

Expand full comment

Not really... Ivacic has been on the injured list for the last two matches with a lumbar injury he picked up in practice last week.

Expand full comment

Well, yeah. We don't do a good job of integrating homegrowns much less producing anybody out of the academy. We also don't do a good job of figuring out what to do with most of our draft picks. How the heck McGraw made it through boggles the mind...but he does play a position of need so maybe that's the explanation.

Expand full comment

And if you want to play it out of the back, then Bingham's isn't your guy. Mayb e we should talk to Atl and try to get Josh Cohen's rights. Not that I trust the FO to know what it is doing.

Expand full comment

I get that Bingham isn’t the long term answer necessarily. But the defense has always looked better overall with him. He puts out a lot of fires.

How long does it take to recover from an appendectomy? If Paredes picks up a yellow tonite, he's out for Col. No Diego (?) and no Paredes. Which means Acosta starts on Sat. That's an IF. Maybe it doesn't matter since Col is dire but I don't want us to be the team that gives the Rapids a W.

Chara is an animal. Seems like they could have just put a few wraps of duct tape around his middle and he'd be ready to go 8>)).

Go Blanco! Looking forward to watching him. I thought he might. I thought maybe one difference in back line, but glad zup and mcgraw are in.

Not thrilled to see Moreno on the wing, but only because that's a lot of running for him out there. I'd rather see him working the middle, but I get you got to keep guys fresh on the wing.

Expand full comment

I really hope the FO during the offseason really think hard about the current roster. Stop just buying random players and having the coaching staff play them out of position or even worse - not play them at all. Santi really needs to be in t he middle. But I also think Evander benefits from also playing centrally. This roster needs to be better constructed with more thought going into how the pieces fit.

Expand full comment

Rotation for this game will be interesting, I hope Blanco is up for the task. I’m kinda sad Blanco and Mora aren’t starting together, they have great chemistry. But I’m excited to see Boli start, I really hope he can grab a goal to get his confidence up.

Also interesting that Paredes is captain over Blanco. Dude has stepped up on and off the field it seems this year

Expand full comment

Speaking of Paredes, he’s on yellow card accumulation. I think I’d rather him get a yellow tonight so he can rest vs Colorado and play the last three games. We should be able to handle Colorado at home without him no problem, Paredes is more effective on the road anyways. I don’t want him walking on ice the last five games, he should be playing hard

Just got one. Out this weekend’s.

Expand full comment

I dunno about us beating Col; they suck but we are very inconsistent. If we come out like we did against LAFC and Austin, then we sould win. I just don't think Col is a cakewalk.

Expand full comment

If I've learned anything about this game it's never assume an upcoming match is gonna be a cakewalk.

Expand full comment

They’re the easiest cakewalk we should have on our entire schedule. If we can’t beat them at home without one midfielder then we don’t deserve much. We’ll need Paredes far more for the other games

Expand full comment

True that. Just wish we we had more depth so questions like this don't need to be answered.

Expand full comment

the only one asking the questions is you!

Expand full comment

I hope Acosta is ready to start and looks good. With the rotation on short rest I shouldn’t be surprised to see Blanco start but I am, a little.

If we belong in the playoffs then we should be able to beat San Jose at home, but I am not sure if we do belong. But if we do make the playoffs, is there any team in the west to really be afraid of?

Expand full comment

I’m a bit scared of Houston right now, they’re playing really good ball and we suck in Texas. LAFC away and St Louis away will always be a challenge. Minnesota will always be dangerous with Reynoso and we have a hard time playing there usually. Everyone else I think we have a shot

Expand full comment

We beat Austin away right?

I'm there now and contemplating going to Tuesday's match but I might have to wait for Saturday's results . Don't want to cheer on Austin if it puts us back.
