After winning a wild Wednesday night clash against the LA Galaxy at Providence Park, the Portland Timbers (8th in west) travel to altitude for their third match in eight days, taking on Real Salt Lake (2nd in west). Will the Timbers overcome their road woes and replicate the 3-0 home win they had at home to RSL on July 13? Talk about it right here with the Stumptown Footy community!
That first half was dire. Let's never play like that again. But damned was that a comeback for the ages and holding on after we squared it up.
It pains me to say that Williamson was bad, bad, bad and worse today. He didn't even fail like I thought he would. He reinvented ways to be a black hole. I know he can be better but I don't have any confidence he ever consistently will be. I want a new 8 in the offseason for sure now.
I think Bravo is just having a rough season. He messed up tonight but he's the best if we want to attack up that side. However, until we get a handle on the defense, Kamal Miller should probably be starting at left fullback.
Crepeau had at least 2 big mistakes tonight too but I don't want to swap him out while we're still building chemistry and consistency on the backline. He's been good and getting better. I still think we need an upgrade at right centerback, though Araujo wasn't bad and he had that great cross for Jona's header goal.
Glad Jona seems to be getting over his yips too.
Wishing the best for Toye. Warrior. Wish he'd gotten a goal before he went down. That foul was bullshit.
Hope Moreno and Antony are up for it in Vancouver. They were a bit mixed today but Antony seems to be rebounding. I hate to speak too soon.
Williamson is killing me; I was initially against offloading/trading him but now I think we needs to go. His performance wheen he's gotten minutes much less chances to start has been underwhelming. Maybe we can pawn him off to San Diego next year. Along with some defenders.
I'll take the draw that feels almost like a win. Way better than a loss. Mason is a warrior, so much admiration for him sticking it out. I was giving Max the benefit of the doubt because he has a crappy defense in front of him but man, he's always off his line. Let's give Pantemis more time.
I don’t want Pantemis back in. While his shot stopping is better Creapeu was directly responsible for a goal last game because he is off his line so much.
It’s even worse if it is a sellout. Imagine selling every seat and having half the people decide it’s still not worth watching, even with their seat paid for 😂
Without Zup, we're screwed. Even with him, we're still screwed cause the rest of the unit can't defend to save their lives. The way we're going right now, that GAA is gonna balloon up to like 350.
8th would mean wild card game at home. With this schedule and crap road performances, that's likely the highest in the standings they will make. The ineptness is maddening.
Mason can barely walk lmao, truly can't believe he got called for the foul on that one.
Like yeah, Timbers should have kept their cool with Penso a little more.....but there's not a team in the league who would have kept their cool after some of this stuff.
Does the NWSL fine players for making those type of comments? Most of them aren't making enough to make it worthwhile. But that was some shade right there.
Maybe because we have deffenders who can't defend? As in, they don't have the necessary instickt to sniff out danger. Except for Zup. And even he has his moments. No clue about Surman since he hasn't played yet. Think Neville and the staff are in denial about the currnt defense corps. They want the defenders to pass in the back. And that seems to be the priority. That's my theory, anway.
Rapids beat TFC and Houston beating Austin means that just getting a draw prolongs the agony. Good comeback but this defense is making it difficult to pile up points, which we need if we ant to move up the table. Can't depend on the teams above us to go on a losing streak.
Maybe Evander felt guilty about missing the Van match and scored the equalizer knowing that maybe we can escape with a point. Thanks, buddy. Just wis you hadn't picked up that yellow.
No Evander next week against Vanc. Guarantees at most 1 pt. from these two road games, 0 chance of home playoff game. And end of Evander MVP chances, not thst they were high before.
So the fat lady's sung? I don't think Evander was really ever in the running except the league mouthpieces were throwing us a bone. As for a home playoff match, when you're at the bottom of the table then pretty big hill to climb.
Guess we'll see if the subs do any good. I do like Toye coming in.
And K Miller picks up a yellow. You know this league will make the big leap up when guys like him drop down to the USL. Or least releaged to end of the bench.
I can’t watch T2 anymore, they’re abysmal. It’s like a 5th grader coaching 3rd graders. They’re rudderless. It’s too bad, too, because there’s a lot of potential.
Was he a flop at T2? Seems like T2 exists just because if we don't have a development/reserve team then it just makes our horrible developental arm look even worse. Like nobody gets promoted from T2...except Ebo and Paredes?
Yeah but Bravo - admittedly rusty - didn't help. Also didn't help that Araujo also failed to shut down. That said, JDM was doing JDM stuff. I should also say that I'm surprised Bravo is actually back.
Yikes! No Bravo and no Zup. Say it ain't so. How many goals do we need to win this thing? Depends on whether the D (what's left of it) travelled with the team. I'm plenty nervous about this game.
You're correct;; team X/Twitter account has the starting lineup out - Bravo's in the 11. Aslong with Antony. Hmm. Since the guy actually sent in a cross with his left foot - does this mean the coaching staff consider his one-footness cured? Even Williamson is getting a start. What's going on with Toye?
Think we all understand the stakes of this match. Stretch run starts now. Even Dallas is heating up - leading LAFC 1-0 at the half.
What in the everloving fuck was the AR looking at on that Toye call
ProRef doesn't gender discriminate when it comes to awful officiating.
Porn.
omg, I wish our guys would fight the other team as hard as they are fighting the ref...this is embarrassing..
Agree. Shows a weak mentality.
This is one instance when I agree with this use of the term "mentality."
This team really does lack composure. Where's our sports psychologist? Don't we have one on staff?
Doubtful. They don't even have a data analyst, which is unthinkable these days.
I missed where we were fighting the ref. But what I have seen from Penso is embarrassing.
That first half was dire. Let's never play like that again. But damned was that a comeback for the ages and holding on after we squared it up.

Love having Chara off the bench.
We really missed Zuparic.
Evander. He's a God.
Onward!
Bravo having a bad season? I think he’s been awesome this year. Last year was a bit of a down year for imo
He got off to a slow start at least and hasn't reached his previous heights.
Consider my gob smacked 😏
May have to watch that 50 times
Williamson is killing me; I was initially against offloading/trading him but now I think we needs to go. His performance wheen he's gotten minutes much less chances to start has been underwhelming. Maybe we can pawn him off to San Diego next year. Along with some defenders.
He and Kelli can both move on.
Imagine being the 2nd best team in the west and still not able to fill the stands
And only 3 points out of first, not including tonight's results.
I'll take the draw that feels almost like a win. Way better than a loss. Mason is a warrior, so much admiration for him sticking it out. I was giving Max the benefit of the doubt because he has a crappy defense in front of him but man, he's always off his line. Let's give Pantemis more time.

The consistently worst refs in MLS are definitely Penso, but it’s hard to know which Penso…
Ted Unkel has entered the chat.
Classic!
Isn’t he like 70?
Is he still around? I would just have assumed he’s retired by now
He reffed Columbus-Orlando tonight.
From a recliner at his retirement home? 😆
xG = 0.57 Now that is how you overachieve!
Aggravating first half, impressive 2nd. At altitude. Toye-way to be stuck in.
My gob is really getting sore 🥺
Insane. This match is one loopy trip to wonderland.
More like a loopy trip to Mediocreville.
The announcer just called this a sellout 😂
If that's a sellout, I invented the Internet
It’s even worse if it is a sellout. Imagine selling every seat and having half the people decide it’s still not worth watching, even with their seat paid for 😂
I wouldn't mind if Neville throws Surman out there. Might as well see what he has at this level. Honestly, Araujo just screams bust to me right now.
Without Zup, we're screwed. Even with him, we're still screwed cause the rest of the unit can't defend to save their lives. The way we're going right now, that GAA is gonna balloon up to like 350.
Won't matter if we make the playoffs as this team clearly doesn't know how to win on the road.
And even if we scrape into the playoffs - like in 8th place - what does that get us? A road game, really. And with this defense, we're going nowhere.
8th would mean wild card game at home. With this schedule and crap road performances, that's likely the highest in the standings they will make. The ineptness is maddening.
Mason can barely walk lmao, truly can't believe he got called for the foul on that one.

Kelli gets it

Hubly looking for a fine there
Think she found a loophole there!
Does the NWSL fine players for making those type of comments? Most of them aren't making enough to make it worthwhile. But that was some shade right there.
Amazing catch by the cameraman. Our entire coaching staff laughing at Jona’s flop 😂
The Dark Arts class taught by Professor John Rodriguez is now in session. First up, how flop and score the game-tying goal.
Wow… not to take anything from Jona or anything, but holy shit that made our defense look like gods
Shoutout to Pablo: guess the guys had rsl right where they wanted them. This team sure likes to give the fans heart attacks.
Shambolic defense, sloppy sloppy sloppy (except Evander) with the ball = bad combo. Just not good enough.
Should’ve been Pantemis’s game imo.
That Real jacket belongs in an 80s roller rink
Why can't we defend?
Or score, too? The offense across the season has been nearly as bad as the defense.
Ummmmm, we have 60 GF on the season, 2nd most in the league.
Aaaaaaand that's that. A road point in Salt Lake? Not bad, but not what we need either.
Lol
Maybe Evander felt guilty about missing the Van match and scored the equalizer knowing that maybe we can escape with a point. Thanks, buddy. Just wis you hadn't picked up that yellow.
Is his goal contribution streak now on hold because he'll be suspended? I would assume, but confirmation would be nice.
Rodriguez coming off the bench and being a turnover magnet is suboptimal
No Evander next week against Vanc. Guarantees at most 1 pt. from these two road games, 0 chance of home playoff game. And end of Evander MVP chances, not thst they were high before.
This aged amazingly 😂 I wouldn’t have even disagreed with you when you posted this… but wow that set piece, lol
At most 2 pts from these two road games. Corrected. That will save the season.
So the fat lady's sung? I don't think Evander was really ever in the running except the league mouthpieces were throwing us a bone. As for a home playoff match, when you're at the bottom of the table then pretty big hill to climb.

Line change.
Well, we got 'em right where we want 'em
Other than the entire flounders 18, there is no one in the MLS I detest more than Caliskan. Based solely on how gd whiney he is
I can’t watch T2 anymore, they’re abysmal. It’s like a 5th grader coaching 3rd graders. They’re rudderless. It’s too bad, too, because there’s a lot of potential.
(And that’s based on watching him play for T2… it’s never good when you’re screaming at your own players to get up and stop flopping)
Was he a flop at T2? Seems like T2 exists just because if we don't have a development/reserve team then it just makes our horrible developental arm look even worse. Like nobody gets promoted from T2...except Ebo and Paredes?
No defense and we can't even seen to get the ball over the halfway line which makes it awful hard to score. Sigh
Gotta do better Max...
Yeah but Bravo - admittedly rusty - didn't help. Also didn't help that Araujo also failed to shut down. That said, JDM was doing JDM stuff. I should also say that I'm surprised Bravo is actually back.
Bravo didn't help him
That’s on bravo.
Yikes! No Bravo and no Zup. Say it ain't so. How many goals do we need to win this thing? Depends on whether the D (what's left of it) travelled with the team. I'm plenty nervous about this game.
ESPN and MLS.com list Bravo in the starting lineup. Are they wrong?
You're correct;; team X/Twitter account has the starting lineup out - Bravo's in the 11. Aslong with Antony. Hmm.
