Tata Martino wants to come back to mls. Yo mp any ambition left?

Story of the match for me was Mabs, Mabs, Mabs...all match long. And nothing positive from his performance other than I'm sure Cincy is real happy he's started. Frustrating given the number of chances we created and it does seem like Evander is being integrated - thank god - into the attack. I am also real happy with how Apsrilla's come back strong from the injury list. We still have work to do. To be honest, am both encouraged by the attack and yet disappointed that we didn't get a result. Basically, we need points.

Speaking of Mabs, any chance we sign a CB by Monday/ last day of the window?

Just checked on twitter. Fwiw, Rifer reports that some Polish source - which broke the news that were were after Niezgoda - states we're looking at a Slovokian cb from Lech Poznan. Reportedly it is Lubomir Satka. Given it is the Polish league, probably a moneyball signing. But what else to expect when we made the big money deal with Evander? Tis disappointing for sure given that if we had offleaded Mabs several seasons ago or just gotten rid of the dead weigh this offseason, we'd have more money to spend. I only hope whoever they get if the rumore are true can come in and play immediately. Compete for starter or at least let us play 352. I dunno but we really need a first rate cb who can teach McGraw. Zuparaic is fine but he does have a ceiling, I'll admit. I guess it is just "pray hard".

Anyone who has more info on the rumored signing or just has Polish connections, please chime in. I have nothing else and I'm not a Polish league expert.

Ryan Clarke has a Timbers source that said this report was inaccurate. With that said, I hope it’s not because we desperately need a center back. I wanted Mabiala to be our fifth choice CB for this year, not our third choice. It’s no bueno, he gives up goals every time he’s on the field

Expand full comment

They could sign Melania Trump and she'd be better than Mabiala (Yes, I know she's Slovenian and not Slovakian, but I know exactly 0 Slovakians).

The attack is rounding into form. Our young guys still get buck fever when THAT moment comes but they're fun to watch. This defense though is going to keep dragging them down. Would have liked a draw.

After the Vancouver game any attack is good

Expand full comment

Fuck Chapman. Cinci lies on the turf for 3 minutes and he gives an extra 20 seconds or so? Thought he was doing a good job till the end. Guess he wants to get home.

Missed chances. Could be tied or we're winning with better finishing. Not a bad performance, but frustrating in just the wrong ways.

Frankly I'm starting to feel pretty negative about Evander. Maybe he's just not fully fit yet. He's played some great balls, clearly has vision and technique. But his work rate in the attack is poor and he doesn't defend. I'm fine with him not getting stuck in, whatever. But he just isn't running at all to find the ball and create. Totally waiting for the game to come to him. Playing a bit like an old school #10 and this just isn't that game anymore. Idk. Comparing to other top playmakers, he's got the ability but I want to see some urgency

Expand full comment

As the game went on Evander slipped into the Williamson role and was doing that exclusively at the end. He looked a lot better when he was out in that space instead of working near a crowded box. He looked good doing it. Maybe that's the answer for him.

Expand full comment

Yeah i mean... Williamson does about as much as Evander has been doing for less millions.

Expand full comment

Work rate?! Look, he's trying to find people to pass to. Most of our guys right now barely get into position to receive the ball much less get into any sort of dangerous position, period. Notice how Asprilla and Evander were working together. If you want a study in negative work rate - try Mabs. And look, this league is one of few in which number 10s work. Just have to integrate them into the attack. And last but not least, today Evander was playing more forward along side Boli. He should be playing centrally. Let the offense flow through him. The team needs to play more off him.

Expand full comment

I think he’s been one of our better players today

Expand full comment

Agreed he was. But we bought him essentially hoping he would replicate what mukhtar has done for Nashville. Evander hasn't yet shown that kind of danger. I hope he'll get there. He currently is not driving at goal or looking like a threat to score. Agree with Mr C below--not exactly looking like prime Valeri

Expand full comment

Expecting him to look like prime Valeri in his fourth start of the season after coming back from injury is setting yourself up for disappointment. Even with him not quite meshing with the team and league yet, we are most dangerous when he’s on the ball in the final third

Expand full comment

That's fair. He did have some great flicks and things. I'm probably being too eager.

Expand full comment

Ftp ain't here so you are taking on the role that the Timbers ain't broke and they don't make mistakes. I said it when we signed Evander. He doesn't have what it takes to be a 10 like Valeri. I was hoping but he doesn't go at teams or create magic like prime Valeri. He is good at picking a pass and has good set piece service and ok speed but he isn't going to score goals or do the impossible like Valeri did. Portland spent like most wanted but not on the right player. He ain't the face of the team. He is a support player like weston mckennie

Expand full comment

Yeah, he’s a different player. I just said I thought he’s been good today. Almost every good attack we had went through him

Expand full comment

So is our player not getting into dangerous positions on them or the coach? Cause I have been saying that for years. Our players have zero training on positioning and finding spaces. That's coaching.

Expand full comment

I agree, not entirely sure what that has to do with Evander -- though I do think the other attacking players don’t quite know how to play with Evander yet. We saw Moreno start to develop more of an understanding with him throughout the game, and they had some very dangerous combinations. I think it will take a little bit for it to fully gel because as you said he’s a different type of 10 than the ones we’ve played with in the past, but I think it will come together eventually and I’m not gonna be worried about it anytime soon

It’s frustrating how narrow we are playing because Evander can pick out any pass he wants, but we don’t take advantage of it. Whenever we’re going forward it feels like our wingers are running to goal -- not vertical, but diagonal from wide to the goal, and we have no width. It then congests the middle and Evander has less space to work with. And yes, as you say, that’s coaching. Evander isn’t being given enough to work with

I think you're hallucinating on the "zero" part. We did have chances but didn't finish. We also had one of the longest steaks in the league of scoring at least 1 goal per match up until a couple weeks ago when we were shut out. Not saying there aren't problems but i still think you should change your name to Mr Hyperbole

Expand full comment

You should change your name to delusional shill

We're going to rue our chances. We are actually having a mini breakout with regard to our attack if you count today and last week. And yet, we're struggling to finish right now.

Case in point: Ayala heading the ball high when he should have easily scored. In fact, he wasn't alone on bad headers.

Expand full comment

Starting to play a bit better, we look more organized and less frantic. Playing more through Evander and running off him and doing more than just “take ball and run to goal”

Expand full comment

O Santi

Expand full comment

Is there a way to teach him to play more off Evander given that he needs runners? Santi right now is trying to play hero ball practially every week and that's not helping us develop a more cohesive attack.

Expand full comment

Why did Mabiala start over Miller? Are they trying to lose? He should be released immediately. And Rasmussen is horrible. We need a backup left back who can actually play in this league.

Expand full comment

Evander needs more runners off him, he can find anyone making any run. We need to take advantage of his wand of a right foot more often

Expand full comment

Someone like Nathan?

Expand full comment

Not a bad idea. Also maybe try playing Evander at his natural position. That might be one of the two big errors Llamosa made. Starting Mabs might be the big one but unless you go 352 or stick someone else at cb...who else other than McGraw? And he's playing fb.

Ok, we pulled one back thanks to Asprilla and Evander. Gotta keep fighting for the result now. Hell, I would be willing to go three in the back and just stuff the midfield if that means Mabs is off.

Expand full comment

What a ball from Evander! And Asprilla is our most goal dangerous attacker!

Expand full comment

My hero! Asprilla is Mr Timbers

Expand full comment

Lot of ball watching. Poor Jazzy diving all over the place doing what he can.

Expand full comment

Do we have defenders? I feel like maybe we could play some ball boys that could also get out run and over commit on the dribble. If it frees up some budget for a forward or whatever I'm cool with just signing like 5 guys on minimum salary and not even learning their names. This is a joke

Expand full comment

Our best cb is out and our next best cb is playing fb. Our 3rd choice cb...is playing cb. And screwing up all over the pitch and has basically given Cincy practically all the chances they've had.. Not to mention "leading" the back line. And the guy who's been the worst on the pitch so far is definitely NOT on minimum salary!

Expand full comment

Our best cb is out? McGraw started and is still playing. He's already better than Zuparich, mainly due to greater height and speed. Soon he will be much better than Zup, who will still be second best cb until we get help.

You don't say.

I can't blame Ivacic; I just can't. He's under siege and getting no support. And I've heard Mab's name being called out too many times...and not in a positive manner.

Ayala was fading this time last game. He still has energy thus far today

Somehow Mabiala has gotten worse and they are playing a high line with him. Suicide. Very lucky not to be down at least two goals. If it were me I'd do anything to get him out of there. Perhaps Mosquera at CB and have Bonilla come in at RB. Desperate times are upon us.

Expand full comment

Just move Miller to cb where he has played regularly and put Bonilla at rb.

Expand full comment

Agreed. Bonilla would have been a better choice.

I'm not really watched Miller much; is he mobile enough to play cb at this point in his career?

More mobile than mabiala

Actually encouraged by the chances we've created. We just need to finish. I really kike Asprilla and Evander on the pitch together. Just a dang shame Williamson is done. I also like Boli's willingness to take shots and to just be basically aggressive iin the box.

How have we not scored?

Evander and Ayala are not the two guys we want trying to score with their head. That should be Asprilla and Boli

Well, according to the commentators...we're just not tall enough to finish off those balls. Me? We kinda suck at finishing, mostly. Just look at our striker stiuation.

Expand full comment

Can we shitcan the McGraw at fb? He's a cb, period. Let him learn to lead the line if Zuparic is out. Just keep Mabs off the field anyway possible. Hell, call up an academy kid or T2 player - surely we have someone - and play him.

OMG. We need to practice headers.

Mabiala should have saved that yellow for later
