And we… are… back! The MLS season starts back up with the Timbers heading into the Texas heat to face the Houston Dynamo. Will Portland be able to take some encouraging Leagues Cup performances into league play? I have no idea, but regardless you have the match thread to chat through it!
I'm sorry that I have to keep repeating myself but gio needs to go. Now!!! This team has no idea how to play a good game of soccer consistently.
Here is my opinion. I think the players can play but choose not to. Look at how they played when they played against quality Liga MX teams. Teams that they know would give them a bump in their reputation if they played well. Then we get back to mls play and they absolutely play like shit. I think they either want an early off-season or they are trying to get gio fired. Cause everything about last year and this year, tell me that this team does not respect their manager. Any player has to know that these kind of games can cost a coach his job. And yet they let it happen again and again and again.
If gio isn't fired soon then fans need to make it happen by boycotting the games
The fish rots from the head. Can’t say that the players are good enough. But without leadership from the top, it’s impossible to say. Paulson did us a solid by investing in this team. But he needs to sell or grow (change). More teams. More competition. Messi. What’s his plan to compete?
Sign a bunch of average players that are one dimensional. Then sign dps that should never be considered dps. They are a poor man's dp. Wasn't high on Evander when he came in. He had done what I thought he would. You could watch his highlights and see his strengths and weaknesses. He is good in transition and vision, picking out a pass. But his speed, physicality, and attacking 1v1 is poor. The one thing I didn't see in highlights was just how lazy and disinterested he looks. Guy acts like he is the best player in mls and he isn't even a top 10 midfielder in the league.
I really though Hou was going to score a touchdown. Seriously, does MP even understand this trainwreck?! We've got folks ready to not renew their season tickets; the possible loss of yet another player to injury; another loss - not a damn point against a mediocre team, and all on three weeks rest.
Stretcher...doesn't look good. With his injury history, Goda might well be done. For the season or with the team next year...your guess is as good as mine.
Hope he's fine, but shouldn't be back next year under any circumstances. If he is back next year, a sign the organization isn't serious about fielding a competitive team. One of many currently on the roster, unfortunately.
IIf we give up 2 more goals, it could be. But we've had some memorable ugly losses. The final result will definitely be a contender in the Timbers Hall of Shame for worst loss ever.
Yes, I meant the remainder of his professional career. He has about as much chance of scoring this year as I do, and I'm assuming he'll be gone next year.
Good on Brad Smith, always thought it was a mistake Sounders let him go. Able to "find the game," transition between disruptor/link-up man * sigh* ...feel like we could use someone like him
It's pretty bad when I can say "a Houston player got behind the Timbers defense and chipped Ivačič for a Houston goal", and it would only narrow it down to three of Houston's goal on the night.
JFC, even when we have a breakaway, we have no clue what to do with it. Just no excuse this deep into the season and after a big tourney with weeks off to prepare.
I just realized that's Timbers results are inversely proportional to the quantity of Gio's coaching.
Think about it: extensive pre-season training always results in a slow start. Then, after weeks off on cup break, there's this turd. The more he coaches, the worse the team gets.
Wanna know who is definitely a good choach? Wilfriend Nancy got suspended fo rthe derby against Cincy. Clearly he prepared his team to play. And let's not forget that Zelarayan just left the building. Sure they're still talented but in this league, losing a player like that guy would seriously hamper any team. And the Crew are definitely cup contenders.
So how many times this year (particularly in the last few games) have we heard "(insert name here) slips in behind the Timbers defense, and scores easily"?
I remember Spenny's last season....I used to keep a bottle of ale to drink after matches because the results were so depressing. Not much of a drinker myserlf so mayber a swig or two just to feel betterr so the bottle did last for a few weeks. Right about now, the heavier drinkers here would get alcohol posioning in a hour or two. That's how bad this match has been.
Would they get fined if they just refused to play the second half? I guess the weeks we had off weren’t enough to get prepared to play another mediocre team.

Paulson is too cheap to fire Gio

Only one thing left to say: #GioOutGioOutGioOut.
What a joke. To think I was excited MLS was back. Gio won't get fired, but he should.
#GioOut. He had three weeks to get the team ready for this match. I’m guessing he just spent the time refining his excuses matrix.
That was the only fight put up all night.
So it’s time...Make Providence Park look like Shell Energy stadium.
10 men without Neizgoda is the same as 11 men with Neizgoda. All good.
To be clear, I hope he’s okay. Also, he sucks at soccer. Both those sentiments can be true.
Jeez, the guy was just taken to the locker room in a wheelchair.
I hope he's not badly hurt, but he really hasn't contributed anything this year.
We might be a little better, actually.
We've got em where we want em with 10
Fire Liam and the physics too..we're constantly gimped
I really hate to agree, but this is not helping his coaching career at all
72" in. We're going full Brazil! I can feel it!
Well Nathan's time with T2 is gonna be short I guess. Feel for Goda though. That's rough.
Stretcher...doesn't look good. With his injury history, Goda might well be done. For the season or with the team next year...your guess is as good as mine.

SWIWS!
So, is this rock-bottom?
The low point is Houston is actually taking it easy on us now.
IIf we give up 2 more goals, it could be. But we've had some memorable ugly losses. The final result will definitely be a contender in the Timbers Hall of Shame for worst loss ever.
At least Colorado and LA get to play on a natural pitch.
Unlikely.
Now they're in trouble..it's Goda time
God helpme...I don't even think Messi, Busquets, and Alba could save this team.
Niezgoda has 6 goals in him. I feel it! 😂
Maybe over the entire remainder of his career.
I doubt any of those for PTFC.
Yes, I meant the remainder of his professional career. He has about as much chance of scoring this year as I do, and I'm assuming he'll be gone next year.
Just as I say that.... poor guy if that is serious.
For better and for worse, since it's on Apple TV, nobody's watching anyway.
Sadly, I am.
If Houston wins but no one is there in the stands to whiteness it does it count as a win?
That typo is impeccable, lol 😂
Good on Brad Smith, always thought it was a mistake Sounders let him go. Able to "find the game," transition between disruptor/link-up man * sigh* ...feel like we could use someone like him
Maybe we are using him... to help get Gio fired. 3D chess?
Gio's no Ultimate Computer...we could use a Corbomite Manuver/Turnabout Intruder right abt now, tho ha ha
"Noone's marking"
Hou going for the touchdown. Is the team trying to get Gio fired because giving up 5, 6, or 7 goals is surely sending a signal?
Clark's revenge .
It's pretty bad when I can say "a Houston player got behind the Timbers defense and chipped Ivačič for a Houston goal", and it would only narrow it down to three of Houston's goal on the night.
Mosquera not defending seems to be a problem
Can a coach be fired during a match?
We should be the first mls team to fire a coach...in the tunnel.
Hmmm. I don't think it's against any federal laws. But maybe Texas has such a law?
I doubt it. Texas barely has a minimum wage law.
You're probably right, not exactly a worker-friendly republic.
Why is Zuparich still in? Gio want to guarantee a loss next week too? He's already on a yellow, and this game was over 15 minutes in.
JFC, even when we have a breakaway, we have no clue what to do with it. Just no excuse this deep into the season and after a big tourney with weeks off to prepare.
Surprised Aruio wasn’t subbed, he has been near a few mistakes and has looked a little lost about responsibilities.
But maybe he’s the only one playing the defensive system the correct way???
We have a defensive system!?
Fair question
I just realized that's Timbers results are inversely proportional to the quantity of Gio's coaching.
Think about it: extensive pre-season training always results in a slow start. Then, after weeks off on cup break, there's this turd. The more he coaches, the worse the team gets.
So does this explain his relative success in tournmanents? Like not enough time to prep so the less he works the team the better the results?
It's all part of the Unified Theory of Gio.
Mabiala in! The picture for dictionary entry for "waving the white flag".
Mabs..now we're set

Gio OUT.
Tequila shots?
Oh wow we are getting a schooled
Ladies and gentlemen....put your hands together for Rasmussen and Caliskan!
So how many times this year (particularly in the last few games) have we heard "(insert name here) slips in behind the Timbers defense, and scores easily"?
It should be a drinking game. But then again, alcohol poisoning is a thing, so maybe not.
I remember Spenny's last season....I used to keep a bottle of ale to drink after matches because the results were so depressing. Not much of a drinker myserlf so mayber a swig or two just to feel betterr so the bottle did last for a few weeks. Yeah that loss to Chivas was....blurry
Coach clearly has lost the team, but clearly a few players are putting forth their ‘best effort’ to make sure a change happens
Would they get fined if they just refused to play the second half? I guess the weeks we had off weren’t enough to get prepared to play another mediocre team.
Bed shat. Do we even train, watch film or prep strategy? Seems like no.
This game is an indictment on Savarese. Weeks to prepare for a big match and the defense looks as bad as any game I can remember.
That’s on coaching.
This team needs a new voice in the locker room- a new leader.
Been Gio out all year and still....GIO OUT!!!!!!!!
Traffic cones could do more than that.
What we're watching right now is an insult to traffic cones everywhere.
Well defense is garbage but we're not getting any foul calls either
True, but has nothing to do with us losing 4-0 at the break.
So does anyone want to stay for the 2nd half? Like what are the odds we score 4 goals in 45 min?
I'm staying. I actually watched that last goal a few times. Marveling at the lack of effort.
I'll stay...I'm a glutton for punishment. I'd like to see some positives. lol
Is there a mercy rule for HT? Asking for a "team."
Evander and Yimmi are the only players who show any sort of life on the ball
No yellow on Baird there?
But Zuparic gets a retaliation yellow, of course.
we're shiiiiiiit and we know we are, we're shit and we know we are.
For the record, bravo not bothered to track Bessi there
Yes, and unfortunately it's a broken record tonight.
Ah var catches what isn’t a foul anywhere else on the pitch. Love it.
