My new way of watching the Timbers is to look at the score after the match to thank myself for not paying the apple oligarchs any money, especially the 17 bucks and the cheaper version of extortion for watching less matches; in which I did sign up for at the start because I was unable to see it live. And guess what...when I used my RokuTv to watch it, I saw the scores! BRILLIANT! I watch Peacock for the EPL for 5 bucks. Besides all of this the announcers never talk about OUR TIMBERS, it's always about the others teams. The Timbers media are not local anymore and I don't have to watch games where the opposing teams always seem to win on the last kick of the match and I have to consider a therapist for the weekly depression.

I’m happy with the point because I predicted worse. We were more physical than Seattle and beat them up which I liked. Happy with Miller; he seems confident and a good communicator. Could be rest but I wonder if Boli and Mosquera were disciplinary moves because that’s slot of skill sitting. The defense was great. The midfield finally took pressure after the back line. Paredes was the destroyer out there today. Bravo is a concern, gives up bad fouls, doesn’t block shots on goal (last two games) and puts defense in bad spots. We were better the first half. Seattle tried to break lines with long passes up the middle and drive our players one on one toward the baseline in the second half. We managed but gave up to many corners.

Anyone else looking at the argument between Nathan and boli and thinking uh oh. Cause that is never a good sign. Any time I have seen that kind of infighting on the field, it normally is the sign of a toxic locker room. You rarely see teams that are winning doing that.

And even people watching man city vs man u said it wasn't the best of games because of the heat. Lmao.

Gio is doing worse than John Spencer ever did.......let that sink in. We have the worst point per game after 17 games than we ever have. Yet gio still has a job.

I'm just wondering what the bar is for mp to fire him cause at this point I'm wondering what blackmail material gio has on mp.

Okay, yeah it was boring but there were some good lessons here. 1) Niezgoda got his start. It pretty definitively didn't work. I hope this settles the remaining controversy over whether he should start. It's not necessarily about talent, etc., it's just he's no longer in sync with anyone on the field (during his promising early days here, he worked well with Blanco and Valeri, but that's a long time ago). 2) We have a good defense when Zuparic is on the field. Obvs, Seattle wasn't at the peak of their powers but nonetheless this is the West's leading team. If anyone had real chances to win that game, it was the Timbers, on the road. Between a solid centerback core, Mosquera, Miller, and Bravo, we have a fine back line. D. Chara continues to wreak havoc in the middle. 3) We need Evander and the rest of the offense to get in sync, which I think means starting Boli and getting more out of Asprilla, Moreno, Loria, and co., while looking for reinforcements. Any updates on Mora, at all?

Ran a bunch of errands today so mostly listened, and it was kind of awesome to hear the AM broadcasters find ways to convey “this game is really crap” without just coming out and saying “Wow, this game is really crap!”. They definitely got the point across, tho.

Man I'm glad I rode my bike out to Troutdale Arts fest on this lovely day and missed this snoozefest completely. Best decision I've made this year.

Anyone know why Mosquera didn’t play? Disciplined for not working in practice?

Expand full comment

Don't know for sure, he has been putting in a ton of minutes (only D. Chara, Zup and Mcgraw have played more minutes despite his sitting today). Seems kind of weird that you'd rotate in a rivalry game and any game where you are at mid season and desperate for points to get above the playoff line ... but that's all I've got.

This whole team, including Evander, need to work on their ball skills. So many heavy touches and misdirected passes. Perhaps this is an MLS-wide problem but it's been awful tonight.

Well part of it is lumen is not a soccer pitch. The ball goes and goes and goes. It is atrocious to watch games on.

For real Deanna, that pitch looked like 1980's astroturf. Messi would have a hard time taking a soft touch there. That said we take a take a lot of heavy touches in general.

They need to work on both on ball and off ball skills. This team has no clue how to move into space and when to lay off. No idea of how to work tegether as a team. It's down to COACHING. I'm ready to fire the whole lot of them. Though I would probably exclude gk and Ridgy because he just joined the staff (and he's an alum). For love of God, there are coaches out there than can coach this team. And without playing this cluess bunker and counter with a bnch of South Americans.

I'm sorry but Apple announcers have to be paid off. Like agenda level commentating. I'm pretty sure teams give these announcers and analysts talking points, cause how in the F can anyone say who is under more pressure. Portland or Seattle and they say schmetzer.

So Schmetzer is under more pressure. Despite having an injury riddled team and having Seattle in first in the west.

While gio had those same excuses for why the start of our season was shit. Gio, who has us in the worst start in our franchise history, with 17 points in 16 games. And we have as close to full strength as we can have now. Gio, who constantly has word salad interviews anymore because he has no idea how to coach and fix the situation we are in. Gio, who has players contradicting themselves in interviews because they want to say the teams mentality is crap (part of a coaches job) and then going back on it because they obviously don't want to be "that guy" that throws the coach under the bus.

Like wtf are people talking about. If we lose this game I want to see "PORTLAND PART WAYS WITH COACH" by tomorrow.

Miami held their coach accountable and now Portland need to and if mp is not going to go give a S#^t enough to do what needs to be done, than we need to force him to sell the team by not showing up to games and getting a petition going to ask him to sell the team

I'm liking The Game 750 radio commentary. Listening to the game while at work and it seems like we are doing okay so far...

You're starting earlier than usual! It's Costigan - he's a Sea homer. As for Mo, I don't think he really has a clue about the Timbers. That's the main downside of taking away local coverage - some announcers don't really have much knowledge of most teams.

As for Gio's future. Maybe if he misses the playoffs. Or maybe we need to take cues from the Gals fans - Klein is also out and I do think the noise they made partially contributed to his departure. I dunno. The one tactic that might work is big dip in season ticket renewals. And since the league is supposedly on the Rapids' case because of poor facilities - how about pressuring MP to sell? The did it to Dell Loy Hanson.

Because it's infuriating. To watch every week us play terrible and every excuse is given under the sun. If this were Europe the fans would already be protesting and demanding the coach be fired or they would start calling for the owners head.

This is an injured Seattle team, that played mid week, that started homegrown academy kids against us. If this game is even a contest it tells you all you need to know.

I'm sorry but anyone who says it's not gio and doesn't demand his head with how last year was, and how this year has gone. They are in flat earth level denial. Like no common sense at all.

Here is facts, here is facts, here are facts!.......nope the earth is flat. It's denying obvious facts and that is maddening. I'm sorry but if you (not you specifically) are not absolutely pissed off about the state of this team, than you are a casual fan and you really don't have an opinion that matters. Cause real fans are the ones that don't accept failure and that's what this season has been and exactly how we have been playing this year. Casual fans are not real fans. Cause those are the people who could care less if we are last place and bandwagon when we are in first. I have followed this team since pre mls. I care when we win and care when we lose.

Expand full comment

I fancy myself a fan and as such I do my little part by going to what games I can manage and cheering on the team. Seems to be about as much as I can do.

We could be doing better, but MLS seems really scrappy and fumbling to me, relative to the European game, or the NWSL, so I'm just pleased to see passes connect and balls sometimes finding their way into the vicinity of the net.

We made the final season before last, right?

I think there's a lot more at stake financially in the PL, what with pro / rel and all, plus the teams are really part of the local culture.

I hate to say it, but even here in "soccer city" there are plenty of people who don't even know that the Timbers exist. I have friends with teenage kids and if their parents aren't fans they are only vaguely aware that there is a local professional soccer team, if at all. ... You won't see that in Liverpool or London or Berlin or Madrid ...

Might explain why people aren't livid with rage at the team's performance, it's just not a lot of cumulative cultural investment. Or a while lot at stake.

Expand full comment

There used to be that culture but it has died over the years. Some reasons being the FO. Some being the lack of ambition in signings. Some being the army protests and kinda alienating the fans that just want to watch the team and support the team. Some of it has to do with the fact this team is hard to watch for most of the year until they decide to try and skimp into the playoffs. It doesn't exactly make you want to watch every game. The reality is that the Timbers used to be "the game" to go to in Portland. But all the reasons I have listed above have ruined that hype in the team.

As for 2021 and mls in general. Making mls cup does not make you the best team. Does not mean you play good soccer. The playoffs aren't a good indicator of the best team. The overall points are a better indicator. Especially when 9 out of 14 teams make it.

Expand full comment

I don't think any US team has ever garnered as much support from the locals as most European ones. It was remarkable when Atlanta came on the scene and promptly filled a 60k stadium, won the final and had the whole town talking about the game - but Atlanta has a much larger immigrant population, folks who are acculturated to truly celebrating a soccer team as a cornerstone of local culture. Sure the Timbers are popular, but it's really just a sliver of the population. They aren't a major cultural institution, at least not as teams are overseas. Again, plenty of people have never even heard of the team. But it isn't like that elsewhere.

For example I recall watching Barcelona win the Champions League Cup in 2015, same year the Timbers won the MLS Championship. I was in the relatively small town of Zagreb Croatia at the time, and the entire city turned out to cafes bars etc. to watch the game, and were supporting Barca because one of their own, Ivan Rakitic, was on the team. The cafes and bars and clubs were standing room only, as were the streets outside them, where the game was broadcast on huge TVs.

The first time Barca scored, the street I was on felt like the Timbers Army times several hundred - when they won the game the entire city exploded into celebrations which rocked into the night - bands, fireworks, dancing in the streets until the sun came up. And this wasn't even a Croatian team, it was a Spanish team with a single Croatian player.

Later that year, the Timbers won the Championship, and I'm told there was a parade in town. But did the whole city light up in celebration? Were all the bars and cafes full of cheering people? Did the whole city shut down for an entire night of celebrating? I called a friend and asked about it and he said "Well, that's October, kids are in school... people are too busy"

Point being, we just don't have the cultural history, and really never have. We don't have generations of people identifying with the teams, the financial or the emotional investment. And I think this partially explains why the Timbers can exhibit such terrible performance without the FO taking decisive action.

Expand full comment

When did you start going to games?

Expand full comment

I hear you. I do think the tide is turning. There are more than a few of us on this board that have asked the apologists to explain why they think Gio should stay. It's always been the same combination of injuries and roster construction. To which I say, Gio has a say in the roster and we're had injuries practically every season. Youl would think a coach would look at the mile-long injury report and maybe speak up?

What's frustrating as hell is we - the fans - don't seem to have a clue as to how to force MP's hand. He's the big boss and the buck stops with him. Sure he's stpeed away (for obvious reasons) but he's in charge of the whole shebang. The rot actually starts at the top. We need to contact the Riot Squad, the Nrodecke, etc. and get advice.

Expand full comment

I agree. It's not like the Timbers army doesn't have experience protesting. Which makes me think the people in the TA aren't the same people from the 11-18 years. The army that cared about everything about this team off and ON the field.

Expand full comment

Look Mo - I like you. You were a good servant on the Nats. But I'm not too sure the players want to play this way. This is Gio. Let's face it - we have sucked at this compact, bunker and counter strategy as long as Gio has been here.
