I think we could've broken down the low block a little better with Liv starting with our A team, and put a few away. Sinc is too slow, and her reflexes are too slow for the quick passing needed to break down a parked bus. Then, closing out a match wouldn't be such a harried mess if we're up by a goal or two.
Yeah, she just can’t even get the shot or pass off in time. And she’s so stagnant. I would say though…not in this game, but in games prior I’ve thought Liv could work on a quicker trigger. But, that’s seems more obvious with her shooting rather than her passing. You watch Man City try to break down a low block and it’s still a TASK for (arguably) the best team in the world. It often requires a string of perfect one touch passes and quick reflexes when a half-second makes all the difference. Liv’s style just also jives better with Hina, Dunn, and Smith…when they’re all moving constantly and causing chaos in the box.
We def should’ve done more with the chances we had early on, though. You can’t put in all that effort for 45mins and not come away with something. SD bet on themselves holding strong and then opening up more in the second half when everyone was tired. It’s what Stoney does every time against better teams.
Yeah agree there. Can’t put in that much work and come away with 0 on the scoreboard. Plays right into Stoney’s plans. If that game went on 15-20 more mins, I think we would’ve lost that game.
She sure is. Just making uncharacteristic mistakes to lose the ball. Can’t count the times I said “Soph needs to work on her receiving” to my partner while watching this game. It’s normally one of her strengths and she’s been an absolute turnover machine since after the KC game.
It's as much the poor decision-making as the lack of scoring. Smith had more than a few straight giveaways - dropped passes or blocked shots - when she had teammates open.
Yeah I am pretty surprised she didn’t get that sub tonight rather than Vasconcelos. I mean, didn’t we bring her in bc Vasconcelos kinda wasn’t up to par? Are we just bringing her in for, what, 2 CC games? I mean, if Soph or Weaver get to rest instead, I guess cool? Seems bizarre to even have her here.
She has played a lot less, aka almost none, than I thought she would. Especially late game situations. But, I guess she gets training daily. I suspect she would play more if we was staying here over the WC summer rather than leaving.
The stream was not so great (cut out too much), commentators not good (JP kept calling Doniak long after she was subbed out, Saskia just plain annoying.
A good game, once again the Thorns were the better team but could not pull it off.
But those were sand rather than water, weren't they?
Still, it definitely slowed down Portland.'s attack and made impossible the kind of one-touch play we saw last weekend. So, I guess we know how to beat SD when they come here later in the season.
I wonder, do we judge a point as very good when Sinc starts as opposed to a more dynamic starting lineup? Given the match, happy with a point, especially since Smith and Weaver haven't scored in ages.
I'm not at "very good" yet. I'm okay with this because we shit the bed in back but fought back and leveled. But we couldn't break down their crazy low block even though the Wave pretty much gave us tons of time and space, and then let them back into the match in the second half. Not UNhappy...but was hoping we'd do better at both ends.
"I'm fine with the high line, too. IF you're head's on a swivel and you can either run a disciplined offside trap or stay with the runner when they break onside. We haven't shown we can do that consistently..."
The high line in part is a consequence of the attacking mids. If Hubly sits off and lets Shaw run into open space we're criticizing her for doing that. After that it's down to tracking runs but that can be beaten by a perfect run and pass.
The thing is...That's What San Diego Does. We knew that. Shit, they'd already DONE it once. The centerbacks can't wait and get skinned by that perfect run and pass twice. Once is bad enough. I mean...we can make excuses for them all day. It's the AMs. It's Hubly. But they knew that SDW was going to to just that and got smoked twice, and the second time Menges couldn't bail them out.
Ah I heard that but interpreted it differently - my read was the announcer lauding Moultrie for the fact that she, at 17, is good enough to take the place of a veteran in a competitive match
Are the producers scripting this for the ratings?

This. It's not that Sinc can't place the ball to beat Sheridan. It's that she can't move as quickly as Moultrie, either reactively or proactively.

I'd like to think so. Still, had a crap-ton of chances in the first half. Frustrating not to finish, Sinc or no Sinc...
Yeah agree there. Can’t put in that much work and come away with 0 on the scoreboard. Plays right into Stoney’s plans. If that game went on 15-20 more mins, I think we would’ve lost that game.
i think also it's fair to say that our world class #9 is in a little bit of a funk right now.
She sure is. Just making uncharacteristic mistakes to lose the ball. Can’t count the times I said “Soph needs to work on her receiving” to my partner while watching this game. It’s normally one of her strengths and she’s been an absolute turnover machine since after the KC game.
Yeah, she's forcing things and turning the ball over. She'll probably get loose at the WWC.
It's as much the poor decision-making as the lack of scoring. Smith had more than a few straight giveaways - dropped passes or blocked shots - when she had teammates open.
she just needs something to go in, i think
Hope so. Dunno what goes on in striker's heads; I was a goalkeeper, and they were my enemies.
Did the coaching staff learn something new starting Sinc again. Magic 8 Ball says, Reply Hazy but Probably Not.
I was surprised to not see Leon get some run out there tonight. Evidently Norris isn't trying to make sure that all his Canadians are in form for WWC.

Way, way too many turnovers.
Good game by Reyes, even before the goal.
Dunn was great.
The stream was not so great (cut out too much), commentators not good (JP kept calling Doniak long after she was subbed out, Saskia just plain annoying.
A good game, once again the Thorns were the better team but could not pull it off.
Paramount is unwatchable. Luckily we switched to CBS Sports app. No problems. NWSL must raise hell with Paramount. It’s embarrassing.
Also, how much water did they put on that field? Looked like monsoon conditions with no rain.
Haven't seen roostertails like that since my last hydro race.
But those were sand rather than water, weren't they?

Still winless in those kits tho.
28 shots to 15 lmao. You can't convince me this is the best way for San Diego to defend.
The announcers were screaming at them for collapsing into their goalmouth and letting Portland pretty much boss their own 18.
Point each? Okay.
I wonder, do we judge a point as very good when Sinc starts as opposed to a more dynamic starting lineup? Given the match, happy with a point, especially since Smith and Weaver haven't scored in ages.

Okay I just tore my couch clinching my hand on that Reyes goal, not even kidding
Happy for Reyes
A point pretty fair. I think that might be Portland's best performance of the season given the quality of the opponent.
QUIT TURNING THE FUCKING BALL OVER!!!!
And this is the risk San Diego runs. If you sit off consistently that can happen
LETTT"S GOOOOOOOOOOOO ROOKIE!!!!
It was due.
Shitty way to DRAW this one, but we had chances, didn't finish, and then got beat in back.
And then Reyna Reyes goes nuts and we're back level.
WTF?
Hehehe...
Fixed.
oh yeah!
GET IN
"I'm fine with the high line, too. IF you're head's on a swivel and you can either run a disciplined offside trap or stay with the runner when they break onside. We haven't shown we can do that consistently..."

*sigh*
This is what San Diego does. They absorb pressure and they play on the break.
Getting beat that high is obviously the issue, I think. But also it's a perfect pass.
Well, there you have it.
Ugh
Crap
Our turnovers are the only consistent SDW means of starting an attack.
what is this commentator talking about? the referee demonstrably said no more to Kornieck like 10 miniutes ago
Hina off for Vasconcelos? Are we playing for a draw? That's...not ideal. The momentum feels like it's shifting against us...
Kornieck yellow FINALLY
Bout time
Should've been booked two fouls ago.
Vasco??
Vasconcelos?????
Mike Norris determined to beat the Canadian mafia allegations.
White knuckle time.
Good save Bixby
It's Po time! Unleash the Chaos!
Was that not a handball on Girma???
I don't think so
Moultrie already with 2 shots on target in like 5 minutes.
Liv getting some shots off.
Sam's been really really good
i missed a minute because of the stream. christ.
Announcer slagging off on Livvy because she's not a grandma? Seriously?
Missed it, what’d they say?
He was all "The game is on the line! You're removing a veteran legend for a teenager?"
Ah I heard that but interpreted it differently - my read was the announcer lauding Moultrie for the fact that she, at 17, is good enough to take the place of a veteran in a competitive match
Boooyahhhhhhhh
Bullshit letting Korneick away with this shit. Should have been warned when she went through Hina from behind.
Kornieck is a wrecking machine, needs a yellow.
Some ref needs to have the soccerballs to toss Kornieck on two yellows for the first two hard fouls instead of giving her warning after warning.
Korn shoulda had a yellow there
Kornan the Barbarian
Soph getting a yellow for a pretty tame foul and Kornieck getting a last chance...come on man
for the love of god take sinclair off
Finally.
What the hell is Norris waiting for? SDW has looked more dangerous this half, and it'd be good to have some fresh legs.
IS anyone else's stream going in and out of focus? At least it's not buffering much any more
mine keeps stopping and starting. incredibly annoying!
Yep
Same.
Has Weaver gone to finishing school for that corner shot. Two great saves by Sheridan
Weird. It doesn't seem like a camera thing. What?
Inconsistent video compression]
Gotcha.
Important Safety Tip: Do Not Give Korneick Free Headers.
Here's Korneick. Daaaamn...
Bixby had like 30 seconds jeez
Hmmm, Kuikka could've shot
