Wow, a telling quote! Who would YOU take from KC?

“Sjöblom also says that she could see the club going out and acquiring more depth when the window opens.

This should am interesting few months as the club is running out of runway to claw back a playoff spot while multiple players have asked for trades. #kcbaby”

Expand full comment

Another quote on the matter: “To follow up, multiple KC Current players have asked to be moved in the window to find playing time elsewhere, especially as players continue to return from the injury list.

Reading between the lines, just too many pieces to fit, especially when you aren't winning #nwsl”

Guessing Labonta is at the top of that list. She went from being a starter and a breakout player for them last year, and is benched this year because of the entirely new midfield they bought. Haven’t looked at their roster to guess who the others could be….

Expand full comment

PDX needs a new HC and GM. We have world class players but not the same caliber of leadership. Our GM (who I love) doesn’t have the ability to fire and hire top talent. Last year and this year … coaching isn’t hitting the mark. We need to follow ACFC’s lead and be bold here…

Expand full comment

Time to fire the GM and the HC.

No, I am not talking about Portland. I am talking about KC.

After today's loss -- conceding twice after the 80th minute to do so -- they dropped to 3-9-0 on the season and sit 9 points and 11 goals behind 6th place Gotham.

KC would have to leapfrog 6 clubs just to make the playoffs, making up at least 10 points in the standings (or 9 points and 12 goals) over the next 10 matches.

NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN.

Come on, Longs and Mahomses. Fire the GM, fire the HC, and go into that new stadium next year both healthy and functional. Kansas City deserves better than this.

Yeahh don’t know how I feel about that.

Obviously she’s not going to criticize her coach's tactics, so take it with a large grain of salt, but she seems to be implying that there are *certain players* that aren’t doing their jobs in reading and being in position to defend counterattacks very well. Sam’s about as articulate and soccer-smart as it gets, so I tend to want to listen to what she has to say.

To me, her quote reads that the players think that they haven’t quite learned how to play the type of hyper-aggressive attacking soccer that they want to play without exposing themselves going the other way. Logically, that indicates that the the 8s and FBs are either not fit enough, overcommitting, or not working to recover in the way they’re supposed to. Which goes back to my early concerns about playing Sinc and Dunn, two attackers, as the 8s.

Ultimately, I still think that the tactics cause that inability to get back and therefore are more of a feature than a bug, but it is interesting to hear Sam --really the one who is exposed the most-- talk about how players need to do their jobs better.

Expand full comment
founding

I saw this more as a negative on certain teams in the league not on team tactics. Not wanting to stop pushing on the attack because some teams want to play a less skilled style of play andbang it long and bunker, lookng at you SD, is not a criticism of PTFC. Sounds to me like she is supports maintaining possession oriented play. Where they get killed is on stupid turnovers, that is technical not tactical.

Expand full comment

Hmmm. Not sure how "doing their jobs better" fixes that. If both AMs and the FBs are pushed way up, and the ball gets turned over, yeah, there's a ton of space for an opponent to exploit. Unless you've got the ability to run a 3.8sec 40 yard dash every eight or nine minutes for an hour and a half AND show up in position and calmly working with the backline...how does that actually work?

And there's game states. You go up two goals, sometime you "sacrifice the way you attack" and defend the lead unless your goddamn Brazil and you know you can score seven more.

So I think this is what it sounds like; a frustrated player who doesn't want to go public slagging off on tactics finding a way not to slag off on tactics...

Expand full comment

Probably both. I imagine it’s just as tough to play next to midfielders that don’t want to midfield (Sinc in particular) as it is to deal with an over-aggressive manager.

It’s one of the things that’s really difficult to gauge as fans- How much is tactics vs. player performance and tendencies?

Or who doesn't want to go off on teammates that really do want to live and die by the attack.

I will leave this discussion today with something positive. I think Weaver's end line runs, and crosses back into the box. They are really great. I really feel like she has grown this season, and I will be very curious to see her production once half the team is gone for the WCC.

Expand full comment

I'm actually really excited to watch the youngs (and olds, I guess lol) during the WC break!

And yes, Weaver has been pretty damn consistent this year. She takes a huge leap each season.

if Coffey somehow does not get called up, the thorns will be sitting pretty during wwc. key pieces still here with youth and depth we should do well

Expand full comment

I think it's about a 5% chance she gets called up, unfortunately. Maybe less than that. Barring injury, Sullivan and Ertz will take those defensive mid spots.

But yes, your point still stands. I'm quite worried about our defense because of how bad they've looked much of the season (almost all of them!), but at least we aren't having to go further into our depth in defense. Hopefully McGrady will be ready to play more, and Reyna has showed promise. We'll likely see all the deep depth for the CC games, but honestly I could care less about those. They could play the academy team for all I care lol. But yeah, at least our starting XI will be ok for the league games. We really do need another starting midfielder or two (or three!) though. We'd only have Coffey, Porter, and Moultrie. No other depth there. Pretty light up top on the wings, as well.

Expand full comment

100% agreement. It will be a great shine for the bench players to shine. And most importantly, it will be interesting to see who takes on the leadership role on the pitch for the team.

Expand full comment

I think Kling and Coffey will be good leaders. I’d love to see the torch passed to Coffey, she’s an excellent human and a tireless player.

Expand full comment

Well, Sauerbrunn's still going to be around for the WC. And hopefully healthy by the time we play the league games during that period. So plenty of leadership available with her, Kling, Menges, etc. And yes, Coffey is definitely a future captain for any team.

Expand full comment

Tactics schmactics, Hogan needs to start next week.

Were the Thorns good today? No. Was the set piece defending bad? Definitely. Was Bixby directly to blame for both goals? Very much so.

Good teams overcome iffy coaching all the time....including last season where we won the damn title. It’s much harder to overcome a goalkeeper who is both shot on confidence and technically deficient.

Expand full comment

Set piece defending? Who is setting up the defense??

First corner Chicago has 4, count 'em, FOUR bodies lining up early and running free to the far post... nobody saw it and nobody moved? Lucky for us thet picked each other off and the corner was too close to the post to get a shot.

They have been zone defending and I absolutely don't know why!

Norris was a GK and set-piece coach prior to him getting this Thorns job, btw lol. I think we know how both are going....

Expand full comment

The field players haven't been doing Bixby any favors. She's been getting hammered. I agree with you; she's toast and Hogan is the sensible choice at this point.

But Hogan starts getting shelled the way Bixby has? Let's just say that Kailen Sheridan was the best keeper in the NWSL for years, and look how many rings that got her and Sky Blue...

Expand full comment

Well yes, it’s *definitely* not all on her and she’s bailed out her defenders a few times as well....but it’s not that she’s failing to make saves (though that’s becoming more common), it’s that she’s turning the routine into really bad errors.

There are plenty of issues with this team, including the coach. But even so, they have unnecessarily been put in even tougher situations because their keeper cannot help but make at least one hugely costly mistake per match.

Expand full comment

Maybe it was over ambitious to see Norris change too much - recovery day Monday, travel day Tuesday, 3 days to train and prep for today, but going back home...we gotta see something to try to become more secure defensively.

Expand full comment

And I think we all had the same thought; keep the FBs closer to home, start Dunn and Moultrie and pick a 10 rather then shove both of them up high. That doesn't seem like a tough adjustment to make.

Expand full comment

At this point I'd be willing to try McGrady at RB and Hogan in goal and see if that helps. What to do about Menges and Hubly I dunno...

Expand full comment

McGrady only plays LB. Reyes is also LB preferred, but Norris has been playing her at RB as often as LB, because we have no actual backup there....

Expand full comment

I think Nally is technically the RB depth, which pretty much says everything you need to.

How left-footed IS McGrady? Is she impossible at RB?

Expand full comment

Nally was a CB in college, I think she's just played RB at times here because, well, we still have never gotten RB coverage since we lost Westphal. She has literally 0 attributes that make up a good fullback lol.

I've only ever seen McGrady at LB. She has played only there in her pro career, and in college was her position as well. So, I mean, sure why not!

yes, Menges has yet to return to.her previous quality, hopefully the. cobwebs disappear soon. Hubly is having to do too much work with Menges mistakes and being out of position to make the play. it has been sometime for Menges.....

Expand full comment

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure Hubly is now on 4 yellows. We're gonna have a Menges/Nally duo sometime in the near future, I'm afraid. To be honest though, she's been pretty up and down part of last season, as well as all of this season so far.

Expand full comment

Yep; Hubs, McNabb, and - interestingly - Yazmeen Ryan. All on 4.

Expand full comment

Had a truckload of turnovers again today.

And Hubly played alongside Menges for years. She shouldn't fall apart because Sauerbrunn isn't there. She's a veteran CB and should be able to deal.

Expand full comment

Hubly's early years where mostly next to Sonnett (2018 is first segment of minutes). 2020 Challenge cup was with Menges for 5 games. Then her first string of truly big minutes was 2021 and 2022, which were primarily with Broon. I agree that she's a long-time professional at this point and should be able to deal, but we might be overestimating how often we've truly seen those two paired.

Expand full comment

I'm thinking Menges is still a) shaking the rust off her mental game, although I think she's fully physically fit (although not the blur she once was in terms of pace) and b) not necessarily in a position with her teammates to assume the leadership role she used to fill (first choice for the armband when Sinc wasn't on the pitch) after all that business with R. Wilkinson.

The latter probably shouldn't involve on-pitch backline leadership as much as it does locker room leadership, but it might. I think Hubly requires good backline "play calling" from someone (that's not a dig...a lot of very good defenders are like that: performing best with a backline general), and I don't think that's coming from anyone but Becky right now.

My thought is that out of five tries Peregrine has had one solid long-term success (Parsons), two one-year one-shots (who both oversaw championships, go figger…), this guy (who looks over his head) and Riley (spit!).

So I’m not sure that finding terrific managers is a thing for them. So 1) not sure we’d see an upgrade even if Norris got sacked tomorrow, and 2) don’t know who’s looking for work who’d be that upgrade.

And the new (maybe?) owner? Who knows!

Hmmm...probably not Freya, I'm thinking. ;)

Maybe they could steal Asako Takakura from Shanghai FC (although I have no idea if she has the English skills).

I'd like to think maybe the Thorns have enough of a (hopefully good) reputation that perhaps the head coach of a great women's college team? But I certainly do not have any suggestions. Something is certainly not right at the moment...

Expand full comment

Which was the point of my list above; Portland has been the flagship club of the league since ‘13, and the coach list has been…underwhelming. Not awful, but the only WoSo Big Name when they were hired here was Riley and that didn’t go well (on the pitch, too, even if you overlook his slime…).

Think about it for a moment; this is a tough gig. The minimum expectation is a title, the current owner is a thin-skinned rich kid, and your squad is full of confident high-profile players who aren’t like moldable college kids.

I tend to agree that it SHOULD be a desirable job. But the record doesn’t hugely support that…

Expand full comment

The sort of coach who looks at such a demanding gig and says "yes...THAT'S what I'm looking for!" is rare. Rarer still is someone who seeks that sort of challenge and is actually up to the task (and add "speaks English" in our case). Not going to be a lot of those on the market at any given time.
