Coming off of a round one win, the Timbers face their first Liga MX test in the Leagues Cup. Tigres UANL are in town, and it’s gonna be a big one tonight. Come chat through it in the match thread!
I thought for sure a Tigres player would get a second yellow fouling Mora in the second half, but the Timbers took Mora out at halftime. Still his longest appearance of the year.
They also want to see Miami make the final, too. If they had their way, any combo of LAFC, Miami, Tigres, and maybe Chivas/Club America is good enough for them. The rest of us are just tournament filler.
Well, we do it all the time in league play. This pressing and a high back line has been a disaster from the beginning of Gio's tenure. He keeps pushing the button for some reaosn. That and making Loria his new golden boy.
First off, that was a really fun match to attend in person. The Tigres fans brought good energy but the TA was in fine form and drowned out any one else until the very end when "Tigres" somewhat took over "PT" "FC".
Really proud of the fight our boys showed down a man. When Tigres got the second, it really seemed for a moment like it was going to be one way traffic the rest of the match but we dug deep and had some fair chances to equalize. The second yellow was a bummer for the whole thing. The Tigres fans near me were honestly shocked as well.
Anyway, it's been a fun competition IMHO and I hope we make it to the knockouts.
I enjoyed watching the team fight for the whole time we were down a player. They really did a great job limiting Tigres and unfortunately Mosquera had a letdown at the end. I have to say that the Timbers have been more fun to watch the past few games, and I think they are playing a lot more free and open. Its more fun soccer to watch!
Well that was a very entertaining game and better than many this season. If they played that hard every game, even with the same record, I would be very happy.
Thanks. That sounds better than most injuries for the Timbers, which seem to almost always last a month or more, many times lasting many months even when not a season-ending injury.
Just getting a draw against Tigres would be an accomplishment; not likely given Gignac is starting. Gotta hope for the best but my prediction is Loria is about screw up the attack. And Ivcic starting...that's interesting.
Rasmussen is domestic though I personally wouldn't have kept Bonnila anyway. Miller is ok but the entire defensive corps is way overdue for a turnover.
I have been willing to give Gio the benefit of the doubt for a long time, but at this point looking at the pervasive negative attitude/body language on this team I think we need to make a change.
I started thinking about the history of unhappy players and it goes back years. Ridgy, Ebo, Williamson 2 or 3 times now, Ivacic, Moreno and now Evander... I could be convinced that Brian Fernandez arrived in Portland clean and sober, but then after a month of Gio's coaching he was like "screw it, I need something to take my mind off work...."
I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out Yimmi wasn't hurt, he just doesn't want to play...
It was going to be a big off season regardless with the significant salaries coming off the books, but I think it may be bigger than expected. I could see both the Chara's deciding they are done here too.
The Timbers bring back injured players at a very slow pace. And Mora was beaten up by Tigres every time he touched the ball. No wonder he was upset when the Timbers got the second yellow send off. I think it was Mora’s first full half of the season.
I hate APPLE on MLS for that one reason. Timbers never get home announcers, while other teams ALWAYS get home announcers. NOTE. i do NOT want to stifle Zivin's rise as he is a good announcer and should be getting the best games; however, we rarely even get to hear Impartial announcers for Timber's games. I believe that will eventually have an impact on Timbers' ability to recruit players. IMPARTIALITY, NOW!!!!
Another random Providence Park question, my friend left her bag in the bag check tent last night. Having a hard time figuring out who to call about this. Any ideas?
Does anyone think that maybe we should not have Blanco in this late? I'd like a point but does anyone really think the Quakes are going to beat Tigres? Even if Tigres plays at half speed? And shouldn't we try to preserve Seba's legs for the rest of the season?
What season? Regular season doesn't resume till Aug. 20. How much babying does he need? He's not really a difference maker at this point, and Timbers aren't doing anything in the playoffs anyway.
I am sorry that sarcasm was uncalled for; however, not even having one positive comment on this game, that other than the first 10 min, the Timber's looked the better team against the best team in Liga MX (until the red card) is very telling.
Timbers are through to next round. There is NO outcome in the next game that puts Timbers in Third. The best defense is to have an offense to pull their wingbacks back into defense... Parking the bus didn't work, so yes Blanco on the field is better. PLUS he has to get some paying time to get FIT.
That does not match my understanding, if that is the case then San Jose would bet us and take first position; however, we would bet Tigres by goal differential. OR is head to head play first tie breaker, That isn't what I understand, but if that is the case then yes we would be third.
Thanks for clearing that up. I was just going by what the radio guys said in post-game. They said Tigres was top of the group, which they wouldn't be if just points + GD, since we both have 3 pts . but we are +2 goals and they're +1.
Ironically, I was going by what the announcers, dunseth?, (that clearly hated the Timbers) stated during the game at the end whistle. So they didn't get that right either.
Wow, reading your other posts, that in my opinion, your hate for GIO is so huge it is clouding you judgement. How is Evander's anger issues GIO's fault? I am not saying Gio is the correct coach going forward (I am still undecided); however, There is no way Evander's lashing out is on Gio, that is all Evander.
Welp the lead was nice while it lasted. Could have gone into the locker room on a high and now Tigres has equalized and a costly yellow. This coaching staff seems incapable of coaching us not to make dumb mistakes.
Evander definitely has an anger issue. Go back and watch his initial games. Hard fouls after a bad pass, ball taken away, or getting a no call. I suspect that is why he was available for trade to timbers in the first place. I thought he was getting over that, and he might be, as his reactions seem to be less egregious; however, his reactions and his not celebrating goals and not shaking hands when subbed, to me MIGHT be an indication he does NOT want to here. One of those and it is a one off; however, putting all of that together and...
My Mexican friend, whose parents had Tigres season tickets and have been dragging her to games every fifteen days for her whole life, went over to the Tigres supporters section to hang with her people , but came back to the North End cause she said we were more fun.
At the end of the game everyone around us gave her a high five... that was a loss but (aside from that ref) not IMHO a bitter one. Makes a difference when both teams play with heart.
I haven’t been that invested in a game in a long time. That was fun. All the emotions.
Garbage call. That should pretty much seal it for us.
That was an extraordinarily weak second yellow. He got a second yellow for his wrist brushing the other player's head?
By that standard, are we going to see any of the three Tigres players that got yellow cards in the first half get their second too?
I thought for sure a Tigres player would get a second yellow fouling Mora in the second half, but the Timbers took Mora out at halftime. Still his longest appearance of the year.
Looked like a tv call to me. The powers that be would definetly prefer to see Tigres in next round over Timbers.....
They also want to see Miami make the final, too. If they had their way, any combo of LAFC, Miami, Tigres, and maybe Chivas/Club America is good enough for them. The rest of us are just tournament filler.
I'm pretty sure we're already through to the knockout stage
You never know..Concacaf refs are notoriious for doing makeup calls. But the last 10 minutes of the half were indeed dire.
What happens when we take the gas off the pedal. Good Ole Gio ball get your goal and drop into a shell and give up a goal
Well, we do it all the time in league play. This pressing and a high back line has been a disaster from the beginning of Gio's tenure. He keeps pushing the button for some reaosn. That and making Loria his new golden boy.

Is Yimmi hurt?
Yup, he's hurt. Again.
What’s his current injury? Do you know how long he’s expected to be out.
Gio said it wasn't serious and just precautionary.
Thanks. That sounds better than most injuries for the Timbers, which seem to almost always last a month or more, many times lasting many months even when not a season-ending injury.
We need to go to a 4-3-2. Put boli next to mora up top and yimmi in the midfield 3. Sub asprilla for boli and Loria for yimmi
Evander giveth, and he taketh away. Way too sloppy.
Just getting a draw against Tigres would be an accomplishment; not likely given Gignac is starting. Gotta hope for the best but my prediction is Loria is about screw up the attack. And Ivcic starting...that's interesting.
Going out on a limb there picking Loria to suck 😉
Honestly a miracle we went that long without giving one up. Defense has been very good all night, but you knew something would break.
The scoreline does flatter us; I think we have to admit.
Our outside backs have been great tonight.
Jinxed it. Mosquera lost the game for us.
Problem is one or both of them get hurt...we have only traffic cones to replace them.
Miller is a bit better than that. Still not clear to me why Bonilla is gone. I'd rather have gotten rid of Rasmussen.
Rasmussen is domestic though I personally wouldn't have kept Bonnila anyway. Miller is ok but the entire defensive corps is way overdue for a turnover.
The entire core? Wut. Zuparic and Mcgraw are good and we have two very good outside backs.
Niezgoda on the breakaway = naptime.
Diego lainez is the player I wanted us to go for as a 10 instead of Evander.
I'm cooking dinner and I turn back to the screen to see Goda in for Mora. Waving the white flag so soon, Gio?
Boli on the roster as decoy, I guess.
Mora for Goda? Gee Gio, just give them half of the field why don't you?
I am so done with Gio his coaching acumen is seriously questionable
I have been willing to give Gio the benefit of the doubt for a long time, but at this point looking at the pervasive negative attitude/body language on this team I think we need to make a change.
I started thinking about the history of unhappy players and it goes back years. Ridgy, Ebo, Williamson 2 or 3 times now, Ivacic, Moreno and now Evander... I hope I am wrong...

Goda? Might as well call it
God dunseth is such a tool. He talks crap about Timbers all game. Ffs a red for evander
Him and Bretos are a bad, bad pairing.
I hate APPLE on MLS for that one reason. Timbers never get home announcers, while other teams ALWAYS get home announcers. Wow, what a shot! Messi who?
Our MF doesn't look up to the task, so we needed that!
I also don't think our defense can hold out for 90". At least having the lead and scoring first gives us a better shot at getting a result.
Yeah, they're doing a lot of good desperate defending because the MF is getting walked around. Not sustainable.
Another random Providence Park question, my friend left her bag in the bag check tent last night. Having a hard time figuring out who to call about this. Any ideas?
So I’m trying to figure it out, but does Evander miss the next game? Or do red cards and card totals reset after the first round?
Didn’t watch the full game, but watch the replays and honestly that second yellow was total trash
Bingham sent off?
Does anyone think that maybe we should not have Blanco in this late? I'd like a point but does anyone really think the Quakes are going to beat Tigres? Even if Tigres plays at half speed? And shouldn't we try to preserve Seba's legs for the rest of the season?

I know but our depth is so limited than anybody helps. Besides, I don't wanna see Seba finishing up his tenure with us injured.
at this point, blanco is valeri all over again. a warm body on the field. nothing more, nothing less.
I agree, we should just put him into a Plastic bubble to sit on the sidelines for all games, like a shinny collectible toy...
I am sorry that sarcasm was uncalled for; however, not even having one positive comment on this game, that other than the first 10 min, the Timber's looked the better team against the best team in Liga MX (until the red card) is very telling.

Actually, a win by San Jose by 3 or more goals sidelines us. Not likely, but not impossible.
That does not match my understanding, if that is the case then San Jose would bet us and take first position; however, we would bet Tigres by goal differential. OR is head to head play first tie breaker, That isn't what I understand, but if that is the case then yes we would be third.
I apologize, I found the rules, you are right head to head is the first tie breaker. So best result is second in group.
Thanks for clearing that up. I was just going by what the radio guys said in post-game. They said Tigres was top of the group, which they wouldn't be if just points + GD, since we both have 3 pts . but we are +2 goals and they're +1.

Mosquera was MIA on that play. Still, he's better than what we've got in reserve. Sucks to have non existent depth.
Mosquera SMH.....
If anyone knows how to coach these guys to be more productive on they get to the 18, please feel free to send in your resume to Grabavoy.

Not a single positive thing to say about anything. I thought I was grumpy.

Hard to put that on the coaching. It was a garbage call. But I get your Gio hate.
We are making too many mistakes in our defensive end. It's going to cost us if that doesn't stop.
You jinxed us 😞
Almost right on time. Yikes.
12 subs listed on the roster on MLS website?!?!?
Lots of Tigres supporters here...
My Mexican friend, whose parents had Tigres season tickets and have been dragging her to games every fifteen days for her whole life, went over to the Tigres supporters section to hang with her people , but came back to the North End cause she said we were more fun.

We're those refs from LA Liga?
They excited much animosity.
