The knockout rounds of the Leagues Cup begin for the Timbers, as they head to St. Louis for the second time this year. Can they advance? Come chat through!
The only consolation I have is that we have the rest of the regular season to look forward to. We have a real shot at making playoffs and actually doing some damage in the postseason. As for STLC - they can look forward to a new coach and maybe drafting someone early if they keep stinking up the regular season. Yeah, I wanna play Club America. But it is what it is. And I don't think STLC is going to fare well against those guys.
Someone needed to step up after Evander's early exit (hope he didn't aggravate the injury that kept his sidelined a lot early in the season). That player should have been Rodriguez, who is in a major slump after helping to ignite the big turnaround.
Been a long time since I heard such ecstatic and biased home announcers, that apparently aren't "officially" home announcers, but their enthusiasm for St. Louis is quite remarkable.
Can someone tell me why the team that won their group with the best goal difference in the competition is on the road to a second place team. MLS making it up as they go along.
Mentioned at bottom of thread but seedings based on supporter shield standings from last season. Yea, it is domb. But it is what is is. It's a cash grab tournmaent - a fun one, mind you - but a cash grab.
Toye in now. At least Phil;s going for it. Who's with me - I'd rather go down fighting instead of playing for the draw and possibly winning it in a shootout. You know, the Gio way.
I'm not sure we're watching a usl match. Did anyone even complete a pass? Maybe just a shot or two on frame? It was more like chaos out there. Like a college match. With players just running forever with no real intent in mind.
Really not sure the chance to play Club America is worth any more injuries. I would like to play them just to see how we fare but regular season is too important to risk rebuilding an injury list.
We don't know for sure that Evander won't be avail for next match. And if we lose tonight, we're off for more than two weeks before resuming league play. That could be good or bad.
Supporter's shield standings from previous season. And while I'm not exactly a conspiracy theorist - maybe it was one hare brained idea to suck up as much money as possible from this tournament. And I thought the Liga Mx teams were going to host some matches due to the complaining from last year?
Yeah but I thought they were going to host in Mexico. At least that was all what the Mexican sides were saying last year. But money talks so this tourney is being solely hosted in the usa with some artifical hosting hubs for the Liga Mx sides. Hah hah.
Because they make up the rules for this tournament on the fly, seemingly. Same reason every LigaMX team has to play all their games in the US despite not, yanno, being based in the US. This tournament is a frustrating cash grab for Garber & Co rather than being an actual interesting tournament, at least for me.
It's funny but when the US Open Cup finally got it's act together when they stopped allowing teams (cough, S**ttle) to buy home games, MLS tried to pull out completely to earn more money in Leagues Cup, and finally when called on it they only allowed eight teams to take part, which means the US Open Cup doesn't really mean anything now.
And even with the lower than expected attendance for Leagues Cup - at least by MLS and Liga Mx expectations - the open cup hasn't even come close to matching the numbers. Even with mls playing away to an usl side. I;m not sure the USOC has mattered in quite a while, anyway. Especially with the repreated matchups over the years.
Leagues Cup also has the regional match-up problem based on the group pairings. I actually preferred the US Open Cup in many ways since the lower league teams were in it as well. The weird seeding they did this year really give it a "winging-it" feel.
Yeah, USOC made itself irrelevant because it couldn't figure out how to do matchups, so it kind of backed itself into a corner, which is too bad. But as a replacement, Leagues Cup isn't it - it's this weird mishmash of a thing that isn't really a tournament and isn't really just a bunch of friendlies, and at the end of it, Miami will probably win it again, and the league will consider it a huge success because it sold media rights and a few extra tickets.
I haven't watched many games of it, but I've seen some highlights and crowd shots look like the attendances are basically like what we're seeing at this game tonight - not great. And the weather in StL isn't even a factor, it's 74 and not humid! This just doesn't seem to be a product that people are interested in, at least in person. And I get it, I have basically no interest in this as a competition other than in that "The Timbers are playing", which I like.
The real problem with Leagues Cup and with USOC is the scheduling and ticket prices. Maybe it is because STLC sucks this season but look at the attendance tonite. Friday night so you'd think people would come. But I get the feeling the cost is something most folks are syaing " nah, wake me up wihen the regular season resumes."
Same with USOC although the tickets are usually cheap. Just that they scheduling and short time to market. Plus the various leages and their schedules - USL league 2 for example. Also ussf couldn't market to save itself.

We lost the Minimal Effort Cup so yeah, Onward
McGraw with the Jona impression 😏
Back to the timbers of old......
Welp. Worst defensive performance in a while. Regroup and keep up momentum in the league.
Been a long time since I heard such ecstatic and biased home announcers, that apparently aren't "officially" home announcers, but their enthusiasm for St. Louis is quite remarkable.
🤦🏻♂️
There just aren't enought adjuectives to describe this defense's inconsistency and error-prone play.
How about inconsistent snd error-prone?
Stool. Shite. Dreck. Abysmal. Frustrating. Woeful. Nauseating.
I'm out
To name a few…..
you forgot ‘shambolic’
Goodnight Timbers
Well, let the Evander convalescence begin.
Pathetic

Let's go? Really?
Set piece defending drinking game. Don't do it
You could do a drinking based around the entire defense. From set pience to giviing up space, etc.
it's been better of late! until now that is
derp
Need more creativity from Antony
Bravo, again, you are awesome!
Wanna see Toye's work rate up top...come to the ball?
John, John, John...
Are these announcers on SL payroll?
Toye in now. At least Phil;s going for it. Who's with me - I'd rather go down fighting instead of playing for the draw and possibly winning it in a shootout. You know, the Gio way.
So long EW
These announcers remind me of the guys on the mic at high-school football games..they need to check themselves on a national broadcast
They must be the last choice Apple team. At least, I hope they are.
Not a shred of insight from these bozos.
We scored off a corner again. Well sorta. But we've equalized so who cares. WTG, Bravo.
Oh my goodness, that was an incredible strike by Bravo. Sorry announcers to ruin your night.
We gave up on game audio a wile ago and have our own soundtrack going. This game works better with the new Jack White album going on behind it hahaha.
Steady as she goes.
the new album is every bit as good as any WS album, I'd put it among his best solo work for sure.
That was really sloppy by multiple layers, and we paid the price, and the announcers are ecstatic.
Yikes! Early season Timbers indeed.
Bravo is just terrible today looks a boy playing against men
it worked I wrote to inspire him to greatness excellent goal
Thank you for your service! not all heroes wear capes
welp
A couple weeks off, nobody else gets hurt...not the worst outcome
FORGET WHAT I JUST SAID
You can't miss that Jonathan. You had time to trap that one and finish, you need to be more aware of your surroundings.
That's been his m. o. all season.. So many dangerous chances, so many point blank misses. But so many chances he scores wt a good clip.
Perfect, we got em now. It's all coming together
Rats, I really thought we had 'em.
Well, Crepeau could have done better there...
He's gonna want that one back. That was not good distribution.
This reminds me of an early season game.
I'm not sure we're watching a usl match. Did anyone even complete a pass? Maybe just a shot or two on frame? It was more like chaos out there. Like a college match. With players just running forever with no real intent in mind.
Timbers woodwork won that half
bold/weird choice to be rocking Gary Glitter in the stadium there, StL SG
My thoughts exactly. I can only assume they’re referencing the Human League cover.
They might want to maybe kinda rethink that one...
"know your history" has never been more true hahaha
Our ball control skills....😒
Damn, our CBs are not looking great this eve.
Failure to close down and loose spacing is going to sink us sooner rather than later.
Early season Timbers allowing waaaayyy too much space on defense are back for your enjoyment.
Mosquera giving too much ground
Our DBs are sleepwalking
Showcase EW here for future transfer...this is playing like a USL match
I was thinking early round Open Cup #Tepid
Homer announcers once again
They're embarrassing.
Shoutout to 'sinuous movement'
that's the name of my goth band
Legit lol

Playing top quality teams makes you better. Plus the game would be a treat at home.
except it would not be in portland. club america, as the higher seed, would host at their "designated home site".
There's enough quality teams in MLS the Timbers need to be better than that I'd rather the Timbers focus their energies on that, honestly.
Absolutely. Though if Evander can't go our chances of getting past them are slim and none
That's it. No Evander. Slim to no chance of winning much less staying close. Unless we bunker for 90+. And imho we're not capable of doing so.
We don't know for sure that Evander won't be avail for next match. And if we lose tonight, we're off for more than two weeks before resuming league play. That could be good or bad.
Definitely not a game for purists so far
I hope that was an 'abundance of caution sub
💯
Anyone see what happened to Evander?!
no but not good sign that had to sub off even if walking off on his own.
I just tuned in. What happened? Non contact injury or did some STL defender kick him?
Looked like a calf strain or something. I think it was non-contact? not 100% sure though. I'm definitely hoping it was an abundance of caution thing
Looks like Finn Surman is on the roster for the first time tonight.
Why did Timbers get an away match when they finished top of their group?
Supporter's shield standings from previous season. And while I'm not exactly a conspiracy theorist - maybe it was one hare brained idea to suck up as much money as possible from this tournament. And I thought the Liga Mx teams were going to host some matches due to the complaining from last year?
Didn't you notice when Club León was the home team against us in the Leagues Cup match?
Yeah but I thought they were going to host in Mexico. At least that was all what the Mexican sides were saying last year. But money talks so this tourney is being solely hosted in the usa with some artifical hosting hubs for the Liga Mx sides. Hah hah.
I would love it if this whole tournament were hosted in Mexico next year. I would also go to it (at least for a few games) if that were the case.
Because they make up the rules for this tournament on the fly, seemingly. Same reason every LigaMX team has to play all their games in the US despite not, yanno, being based in the US. The seeding is based on last years record I believe. Why? WTFKs
Yeah, nothing about the setup of this thing makes sense. I'm just mostly holding my breath that nobody gets hurt during it.
Aaaaaaaaand just like that, down goes Evander. Fkin awesome.
