Reaction: Portland Thorns' Sophia Wilson featured in Nike's first Super Bowl ad in nearly three decades
Nike's newest brand anthem, "So Win" featured Jordan Chiles, Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu, Sha’Carri Richardson, A’ja Wilson, and Sophia Wilson.
If you were watching the Super Bowl yesterday for the actual game (it wasn’t good), or most of the commercials (they also weren’t good, for the most part), you may have been disappointed.
(Editor’s note: the halftime show was straight fire, though.)
But if you endured the commercials until the second quarter, you may have seen a familiar face: Sophia Wilson (née Smith). Nike really had a Super Bowl ad dedicated entirely to Women’s Sports. Yes, you read that right!
For them to use their platform and highlight Women athletes on the NFL’s biggest stage is a ‘mic drop’ moment, but also one that is historic and a milestone moment.
For the first time in nearly three decades, Nike decided to drop a Super Bowl commercial and they did it in the biggest way imaginable.
Nike’s newest brand anthem “So Win,” is a celebration of the power of sport — harnessing Nike’s iconic roster to encourage all athletes to block out the noise, dig in and let their hard work speak for itself.
Their newest Super Bowl ad featured some of the biggest names in sports including: Jordan Chiles, Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu, Sha’Carri Richardson, A’ja Wilson and Sophia Wilson.
“At Nike, we make sure the athlete is at the center of everything we do, from product creation to storytelling,” says Nicole Graham, Chief Marketing Officer, NIKE, Inc. “We are at our best when we are representing the voice of the athlete and their voice becomes our voice. This brand anthem, featuring elite Nike athletes, is a perfect example of how we can inspire everyone to win, whatever that means for them.”
However, the significance of this moment can’t be understated. Nike deciding to come out of 27 years of hibernation to drop a Super Bowl ad with the biggest names in women’s sports says it all.
Sophia Wilson has already solidified herself as one of the biggest names in soccer, but this platform was one of the best ways to see her greatness be recognized. If it wasn’t already clear enough, she is also the face of the Portland Thorns, NWSL, and the USWNT. Her influence has always been known to women’s soccer, but now it goes beyond to all sports as well.
In the Portland Thorns’ club history, they’ve never had a player like Wilson who is as dominant on the pitch as she is off of it.
Whatever it takes, they cannot afford to lose her. It’s time to make her the first annual million dollar player in women’s football.
Lisa Bhathal Merage, Alex Bhathal, and Jeff Agoos, it’s your move now.
Hey Phuoc/STF folks- do y'all have any information about the club having any sort of media day? We never got a postmortem of 2024 season (and I'm guessing we never will.) But, will there be a media gathering to discuss this season? Is there a reason why they're delaying or not wanting to face the supporters? Releasing info about the training facility was nice, but it doesn't replace the need to still have other communication about what's going on with the club...
Will there be any more signings? Can we get an update on Sophia Wilson? There's a lot of ambiguity out there still and it would be nice to be going into the season with more answers than questions...
Gale playing a non winger as a winger. This should be a game . Take a shot of any drink every time Rob plays someone out of position
