I know phil and ned said we'd get a big signing this window, but I believe not big in terms of status, but in size. I'd bet 6'5 battering ram CF Kieffer Moore is coming to Portland!

Great show!

I like the new jersey. The idea is good and the theme is something no one can argue over. I'd prefer a darker green, though, and if they truly wanted to stir it up, they should show the life of a tree from the sapling to the log slabs Timber Joey cuts for each goal. The video is corny. I couldn't listen all the way through.

Strengths and Weaknesses: If the Timbers want to win, they'll have to improve on defense and be able to take over games and control them and not be so reactive. Crazy enough, they were poor last year on both fronts and still nearly made the playoffs. This year, though, the league is better and they won't come close if there is no improvement. One thing K Miller does well, I think, is step to the ball and that will help maintain possession. The keeper is an improvement, too. E Miller will be fine until Bravo comes back. My question mark is Juan "defense optional" Mosquera. At least that was the case last year. Here's to Phil lighting a fire in him and showing him how it is done.

I think it basically comes down to winning mentality and leadership. Where will the leadership come from? The new defensive players? I think that is the logical place, and extends to the rest of the team.

The big key for me is how the midfield performs, and specifically Eryk Williamson. I'm hoping he is a big contributor this year and facilitates and progresses the ball, etc., while also being a defensive presence. Scoring will happen only if the midfield controls things, and I am not sure that will happen. We'll see.

It's a new year and I'm excited to finally see the season start up. Go Timbers!

Fantasy take: Phil gets serenaded by the Army after the Timbers stuff three past Steffen.

Reality take: 1-0 win on a McGraw header off a set piece/corner.

I don't think you can expect the new defenders to be the leaders when the rest of the team doesn't really speak English and they don't speak Spanish.

I think the Evander/Eryk midfield experiment will be done after a few matches. It's just a sieve that Chara can't cover at this point.

I heard one of them speaks Spanish - I think it was Crepeau. I like how both he and K Miller and McGraw are out in front of the team with the media. I imagine they are like that behind the scenes as well.

RE midfield: yeah, that's what I got my eye on. What kind of pressure will the backline have given what's happening in front of them?
