Mason Toye, whose contract runs through 2024 with a club option for the 2025 season, was acquired from CF Montreal for a 2025 MLS SuperDraft pick and up to $200k in General Allocation Money (GAM) based on “certain performance metrics” being reached. He featured in all three of the Timbers Leagues Cup matches since joining the club on July 23, scoring one goal in just 84 minutes off the bench. After Asprilla’s departure, the Timbers needed a serviceable MLS forward to replace his minutes, and Toye is exactly that.
Finn Surman was acquired from A-League side Wellington Phoenix for a reported $500k (according to Transfermarkt) and has yet to feature for the club due to his involvement with New Zealand at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Surman immediately fills the fifth centerback position on the depth chart vacated by Larrys Mabiala, and likely won’t supplant any one of Dario Zuparic, Zac McGraw, Kamal Miller, or Miguel Araujo’s minutes this season. But with five caps for the New Zealand national team at just 20 years old, his signing and profile represent shrewd future planning from General Manager Ned Grabavoy for the seasons ahead.
