Portland Thorns sign defender Sam Hiatt
Sam Hiatt is coming back home to the PNW - but this time it's with the Portland Thorns.
The Portland Thorns just signed one of the best free agent center backs available.
Today, the club announced they signed defender Sam Hiatt to a two year contract through 2026 with an option for 2027.
“I’m so excited to be a Thorn and to be joining such an amazing club and passionate soccer city,” said Hiatt.
Hiatt joins Portland after spending her first four years with Seattle Reign and last season with NJ/NY Gotham FC. She was drafted 33rd overall in the 2020 NWSL Draft to her home state club, Seattle Reign, out of Stanford University.
“We’ve had the opportunity to watch Sam up close for many years as she played with both Seattle and Gotham. She has proven to be capable at this level, and matches both the positional need and player profile that we are looking for as we begin to build for the upcoming year,” head coach Rob Gale said. “Having spoken with Sam, I have been impressed by her character, coupled with her desire to play in Portland and her commitment to improving her game as part of this team.“
This fills a major need for the Portland Thorns with the uncertainty of Becky Sauerbrunn. They had a rotation of three center backs last season: Kelli Hubly, Isabella Obaze, and Sauerbrunn. Don’t expect the club to be done at this offseason either.
The general manager announcement will be happening soon as well. What else would you like to see them do this offseason?

Hey everyone, I just realized... I interviewed her at the 2023 NWSL Championship media day.
I am going to put together a shorter Kickin' It with Sam Hiatt together for you all.
Happy with this signing but let's make sure we also re-sign Becky. Yes, she's in the latter stages of her career but her final year (whenever it comes) should be in Portland. We need her leadership and stability on and off the field.
