Portland Thorns supporters got two tough pills to swallow when they learned in the off-season that both of Portland’s main strikers Sophia Wilson and Morgan Weaver won’t be available for the 2025 season.
In case you missed it, Weaver was placed on the Season Ending Injury list and Wilson is out due to pregnancy (my most sincere congrats).
So where does that leave the Thorns’ offense? Of course, in big trouble. But we have to stop thinking about what we lost and start to think about what we have.
So, who’s left in the Thorns’ attack?
According to the 2025 roster the club published on March 12, Portland will count on Deyna Castellanos, Caiya Hanks, Payton Linnehan, Alexa Spaanstra, Pietra Tordin, and Reilyn Turner. Who do we expect to be the starters? Of course, that will depend on the formation coach Rob Gale uses, but our main candidates would be Linnehan, Turner and Castellanos if they play with a 4-3-3 formation. However, if Gale goes with a 4-4-2, he might choose a dose of experience in the form of Castellanos and a dose of explosion in the form of Linnehan or Turner.
What can we say about each one of them? You will see some of the data from 2024 for three of them here.
