Those still interested in the Sophia handball it was covered in the weekly VAR review. Take a look at the zoomed in goal side camera angle if you think you see direction change or not.
+1 "That thing is the thing you think it is" has me still searching for the change in direction or spin. I'm biased as hell here, but cannot come up with case for reversing the call on the field.
The second scenario reversing the undeserved yellow was well and properly done, and not something I'd have guessed was reviewable.
I didn't believe the Magic Bullet theory, and I don't believe the ball changed direction here. Oswald didn't act alone, and Smith didn't redirect that ball.
Gotta give it to them and to Harvey, because she did some kind of mind tricks on Stoney while impressing on her squad that they were still in it.
Then, the hockey game broke out. Suspect we've got ourselves a lasting rivalry between these two. Zero love there. Pro tip: when Fishlock is barely in the top 10 most-annoying players on the pitch, there's something in the Gatorade.
Carusa's goal was amazeballs and should have been the game winner. Then, Balcer's pickpocketing also remaining upright After Sheridan tried to take her down (which would have been a fast second red) was 100% her willing herself into the game. Finally the Ji Latsko combo on the corner and header...one of the best headers I've seen.
In sum there must have been 25 minutes of extra time.
And I just saw a video that should’ve been another red on SD. Clear studs to the knee! Can’t believe Chesky missed that one, it was more egregious than the other two…
It was so start/stop/start/stop bc of fouls (almost 40 combined!) Another Sheridan “when playing it out of the back goes wrong” play where she was stripped by Balcer for dawdling and then a poor pass. Tied the game when SD was a player and a goal up. Then Seattle had one lucky shot at the very end of the game against the run of play, but ya gotta give it to ‘em for looking like they wanted it more even if the play wasn’t great… San Diego just looks meh also.
Also, they did have a lot of key injuries but Stoney’s lineup and sub decisions were kinda baffling…
I guess we picked a good year to get off to a horrible start. A bit of a turnaround, and suddenly we're in the thick of it.
There's still been a decline in quality of play in the league over the last couple-three seasons. We started getting picked over by rich Euro sides once WoSo FINALLY started to take off over there about then, and it's hurt. Fortunately, I think I'm seeing signs of NWSL ownership (and other decision makers) trying to reverse that trend. This helps the league AND players of sufficient clout to take advantage of the higher salaries a more-competitive NWSL will have to pay. Rank-and-file players will benefit, too...but it will take longer.
My poor WE League, however, will continue to get picked over, since while things continue to grow here, the pace of growth is slower AND Japanese girls academies are incredibly good at what they do, so there's a stream of quality players available all the time.
Does SDW miss Girma and Dahlkemper much? Good grief but they were awful playing from the back. Against ten for the whole game and constantly passed into pressure instead of finding the open side. Reign was in their element: bunker, foul, and dive. Worst match of the year contender despite the stoppage time dramatics.
Kinda OT, but can I just gripe about what an utter trashfire the "new" NWSL website is?
The "stats" tabs are a joke. Anything actually useful, like the pass and shot maps, or the formation diagrams, is gone.
The "schedule" only shows the current week.
The little match report that used to be in the "news" tab is gone; now it's "match info" that's only a bare bones numbers sheet.
WTF, league? Is this your idea of "what the fans want"? Then you must assume that most of your fans 1) know nothing about the mechanics of the game, and 2) don't care. That's pretty insulting!
The new "revised" website is horrible! Get it together NWSL. Last years format was useful and intuitive. This years has confusing data, limited schedule, and no match recaps. Please just change it back to last years format, as this years is a big step backwards!
It does seem encouraging? I spent quite awhile yesterday researching torn ACL diagnostics (while avoiding doing my actual job) and it seems like a relatively fast and reliable diagnosis — no imaging required.
That, of course, doesn’t mean that is isn’t myriad other potential knee-related SEI, but I’m thinking it’s not a full ACL tear 🤷🏽
Thinking back to Janine's last year, which was gruesome and instantly season-ending, Morgan's might be a strain, bone bruise, "slight" tear and not something requiring surgery. Any can still be a weeks-long healing and recovery break.
I don't like it when they play coy but at this point no news is good news. She'll be in the park today and a lot of eyes will be on her for a hundred armchair medical workups.
We act like experts when we see it, but trying to figure out what ligament was damaged from observation is not something I believe most people are qualified to do.
Wrong diagnosis of an injury at the time by fans is a time honored tradition of inaccuracy (including myself).
I’m not a doctor and haven’t played one on TV. Doesn’t stop me from saying that looked bad, but that’s all I got. My assumption is I’m not alone here.
Hope she is OK and it wasn’t as serious as it looked
Yep. And there may not be much anyone can do about it. Football is hard on the knees, and females' wider average pelvic Q-angle makes it that much worse (in terms of propensity for ACL injuries). =(
This brings back a memory of mine which is almost precisely forty years old. A friend of mine from my summer camp and I were discussing our experiences as three sport athletes at what are now classified as AA and A schools in our Eastern Oregon hometowns. She described her medical analysis of a basketball season-ending knee injury in precisely the manner you've mentioned here. It was something that twenty years later came to my mind particularly in following the Rapinoe sister's careers at UP, with their three major rehabs between them (two for Rachael and one for Megan, as I recall).
2-1 Thorns with Beckie and Smith getting their goals
In the "better late than never" category: match report from midweek: https://rivetingpdx.com/2024/05/04/thorns-fc-lucky/
"Thornitos"
Cheese that goes crunch!

watching the replay i could see the ball change direction slightly, so seemed like the right call to me, anyways.
Maaayyyybe. But what happened to "clear and obvious"?

Not too good at French name pronunciation though.
That's about as good as the guy who kept calling Hina "Soo GEE toh."
Heh, Mandy gets a third first name. :-)

Reign-Wave, holy hell what a gut check. Also, card fiesta, Ole!
8 yellows, 1 red. That's quite a game of UNO!
Also, how did Seattle lose King and play 1 down from the 9th minute on, then come back to win?
Gotta give it to them and to Harvey, because she did some kind of mind tricks on Stoney while impressing on her squad that they were still in it.

Hayes, er Harvey > Stoney
2 reds: Kristen McNabb got sent off in 2nd half stoppage time for a right hook to the jaw (!!) of Jess Fishlock.
Didn't see that! Wow! It's like the Western Hockey League - Seattle Totems vs. San Diego Gulls on a Friday night!
And I just saw a video that should’ve been another red on SD. Clear studs to the knee! Can’t believe Chesky missed that one, it was more egregious than the other two…
What are you saying? That Chesky misses calls?
Yeah, I remember that one, too! You'd think that would have left visible wounds...

Sheridan is always good for a derp or two. Pretty good keeper otherwise.

Lose their best player and a solid starter is going to impact most teams
Gotham picking NC apart, early.

The Availability Report has been posted. Weaver is out with knee injury! ☹️
https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/availability-report
Are we pondering out > SEI? There's nothing positive about an injury but getting Morgan back at some point would be wonderful.
It does seem encouraging? I spent quite awhile yesterday researching torn ACL diagnostics (while avoiding doing my actual job) and it seems like a relatively fast and reliable diagnosis — no imaging required.

I’m the eternal optimist but I’m choosing to believe that they’re not playing coy, but it’s kinda a borderline injury.
We act like experts when we see it, but trying to figure out what ligament was damaged from observation is not something I believe most people are qualified to do.

Holy Hell! Look at all the SEI knees on that report. There's like 20 SEIs on there, and at least half of them are knees.
Yep. And there may not be much anyone can do about it. Football is hard on the knees, and females' wider average pelvic Q-angle makes it that much worse (in terms of propensity for ACL injuries). =(
